DOG SHOW BRINGS IN TOYS; KENNEL CLUB HELPS MARINES' EFFORT FOR KIDS AT CHRISTMAS.

With 214 entries Saturday, the dog show and Christmas toy drive sponsored by the Burbank Kennel Club Kennel Club

Dog breeders from around Southern California came out to enter their dogs in what is considered an unofficial warm-up event, with each entrant donating at least one toy for the Toys for Tots Toys For Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which donates toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas. The program was founded in 1947 by Major Bill Hendricks.  drive organized by the Marines.

``We set out to put the show to good use and gather toys for kids, and that's what we did,'' said Burbank Kennel Club spokeswoman Valerie Anne Yale. ``It was a success.''

``It's great when people get involved like this,'' she said. ``Every little bit counts for the kids.''

And if you guessed that the most popular donated toys were stuffed animals, you were right.

Dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds took part in the competition.

 Papillon papillon (păp`əlŏn'), breed of toy dog whose origins are obscure but whose widespread existence in Europe is attested to as early as the 17th cent. It stands from 8 to 11 in. (20.3–27. , a dog with French origins that measures just 10 inches.

The name Papillon comes from the French word butterfly, and it is appropriate because the dog's big, round ears look almost like wings.

The couple said Papillons Papillons, Op. 2, is a piano piece written in 1831 by Robert Schumann. Meaning 'butterflies,' Papillons begins with a 6 measure introduction before launching into a variety of dance-like movements.  were first bred as pets for the royal families of France, and legend has it that 18th-century French Queen Marie Antoinette gave the dog its name.

Frank and Robin Vasquez of Gardena brought their 9-month-old Afghan Hound named Lector, also known as a black-and-tan for its distinctive long, dark fur and beige chest and feet.

``His father's name is Hannibal, and they got their names because they're terribly moody,'' Robin Vasquez said.

She said the breed has its origins in the Far East, and have been used as hunting hounds for generations, especially in the hunt for snow leopards.
