"I like it when he comes in," teller Janel Schneider said. "When he goes to another teller I go look at him - he's so cute."

Eddie is a golden retriever golden retriever, breed of large sporting dog developed primarily in Scotland in the mid-19th cent. It stands about 23 in. (58.4 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 60 to 75 lb (27.2–34.1 kg).  who serves as an extra pair of hands for Don Krebs, a quadriplegic quadriplegic /quad·ri·ple·gic/ (-ple´jik)

who relies on the pooch nearly round-the-clock to pick up pens and remote controls, push elevator buttons and even pull his wheelchair when Krebs is too tired to wheel it himself.

Krebs obtained the 4-year-old pooch about a year ago through San Diego-based Canine Companions for Independence.

"These are $10,000 dogs but he only cost me $100," he said. Krebs was on a waiting list three years before he got Eddie. "It took me a long time to get him," he said. "A lot more people want them than they have dogs."

Eddie - named after Eddie Bauer sporting goods, which supports the canine training program - spends nearly every moment by Krebs' side, assisting him at home as well as at Krebs' business, Access to Recreation. The company specializes in recreational equipment for the handicapped.

Eddie demonstrates amazing dexterity for a four-legged friend. One night recently Krebs dropped a bottle of salad dressing that, fortunately, still had its top firmly on. "He was smart enough to use his front paws to stand it up so he could get his mouth around it," Krebs said.

On banking day, Eddie trots happily alongside Krebs as he wheels his way to the teller's window. Tail wagging wildly, the pooch picks up the green money pouch from the man's lap, stands on his hind legs, turns over the sack to the teller and waits patiently for the teller to count out the money.

"He really is becoming my best friend," Krebs added. "I used to live alone - not any more."
