Only yesterday, it seems, the champagne corks were popping, the cars were stacking up along Sepulveda Boulevard, and the restroom shortage was starting.

Has it really been a year since the opening of the Getty Center Getty Center, art museum complex in Brentwood, Calif. operated by the J. Paul Getty Trust. It consists of six buildings on 124 acres (50 hectares) located on a spectacular promontory overlooking Los Angeles. , L.A.'s most publicized tourist icon since Disneyland?

For the Getty's staff of 1,200, it's been a period of getting to know a vastly enlarged public audience and adjusting to new institutional priorities.

For the nearly 2 million visitors who've flocked to the Brentwood hilltop, it's been a year of encountering breathtaking vistas and old art works in new contexts. (For more on these past 12 months of change, see the main story in L.A. Life.)

Getty's fundamental imperative was acquiring artworks. While the collection certainly will continue to grow - the Getty just last month plucked an Impressionist masterpiece by Claude Monet - public education now also is a prime Getty watchword.

With that in mind, we've asked a few Getty observers - including its own head honcho Honcho

``As an overall grade I think I'd give us an A-minus. I think overall it's been a spectacular year, that we've been A-plus to A on the outreach, the connections, the quality of the facility. I think we could've done better earlier on knowing how to manage the people and the flow and the infrastructure and the resources. And I wish we had been out earlier and more aggressively on some of these partnerships and leveraging issues. And the other place where I'm less than totally happy is in this notion of just the weaving together of all the programs.''

Neil Anstead, Humanities Magnet coordinator, Cleveland High School, Reseda: A

``In their relationship with us, it's an A grade. They're supportive, they want to use their money wisely, you call them and invite them out, they will come out, they'll be supportive when they're there. I have no reason to think that they could do more, really.''

Evelyn Stern, president, Brentwood Homeowners Association: P (pass)

``I haven't heard about any problems (with traffic congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.

and on-street parking) for the last six to eight months. It seems things settled down or shook themselves out after the first two or three months. A grade? It's hard to say. Besides, I've heard there's grade inflation nowadays.''

Zev Yaroslavsky Zev Yaroslavsky (born December 21, 1948) is a Los Angeles County politician. He served on the Los Angeles City Council from 1975 until 1994, when he was elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. He was preceded in both offices by Edmund D. ``A-minus. I think it has been and will continue to be a magnet for people from all over the country and all over the world. The minus is their original impact on the neighborhood, which was unanticipated and I think should've been anticipated. I think Barry still is getting his ducks in order over there, and once he does, the minus will disappear.''

``C-plus. It's a museum in its adolescence. And it's not an adult; there are a lot of places that have been around a lot longer. It's like having a teen-ager with an expense account: What are you going to tell him? And I think in time the Getty will grow up, take stock and really come up with ideas about bonding with Los Angeles.''

``As far as I'm concerned it's a triple A. I think it's been a big boost to the economy and I think it's been a big boost of pride to our community.''

Cindy Miscikowski, L.A. councilwoman representing Brentwood, Encino, Tarzana, Woodland Hills and West L.A.: B+

``Overall I would give the Getty a B, probably a B-plus. On reaching out to the community I think they have done outstandingly. In telling its message, I don't think it has done as well. It is doing phenomenal things, but I don't think enough is known about them. (In) accommodating the public in terms of the parking, the traffic, generally I think that's been managed rather well, but they still need to go a bit farther.''
