DOE WILL TEST NUCLEAR FACILITY.

Byline: Lisa Mascaro Staff Writer

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - The Department of Energy said Tuesday that it will conduct an environmental review of the remaining cleanup project at its former nuclear energy research facility in the Simi Hills The Simi Hills are a low rocky mountain range in Southern California. , a move that critics blasted as coming too late in the process.

The department said it will hold a public meeting in coming months to gather community input on work at the Santa Susana Santa Susana can refer to several places:
  • The Santa Susana Mountains in southern California
  • Santa Susana Pass, running through the abovementioned mountains
  • Santa Susana Field Laboratory, near Los Angeles, a test facility for rockets and (formerly) nuclear reactors

buildings will be halted while the assessment is being conducted.

If the initial review turns up environmental problems - for example, contaminated buildings that need to be dismantled, or soil or water that needs to be cleaned or hauled away - it would trigger a more in-depth environmental review, which already has been demanded by activists.

``I think it's an opportune time,'' said Mike Lopez, environmental restoration project manager of the DOE's Energy Technology Engineering Center, a 90-acre facility at the 2,700-acre lab.

``At this time we thought we needed a comprehensive document.''

Lopez said the department decided to conduct the environmental assessment after the state announced recently that it would conduct a full environmental impact report of chemical contamination See: contamination.  at the lab.

However, anti-nuclear activist Dan Hirsch said the Energy Department should have conducted a full environmental impact statement - a federal report similar to the state EIR EIR n. popular acronym for environmental impact report, required by many states as part of the application to a county or city for approval of a land development or project. (See: environmental impact report)  - from the beginning.

``They have flouted the law for a decade. Rather than comply, they are doing a quick and dirty environmental review,'' said Hirsch. ``Rather than comply, they are doing this dinky environmental assessment instead.''

Lopez said the department was abiding by the laws.

, the EPA's project manager for the Santa Susana lab, said the review could help prevent problems - such as when contaminated buildings the EPA EPA eicosapentaenoic acid.

``I think it's still a good step to take now,'' said Kelly. ``There's potential they'll trip over some unknown areas. There's the potential there's still more work to be done.''

The work is to be conducted by a contracting company, and take about one year to complete. Lopez could not estimate the costs.
