DOE Under Secretary for Science to Address Business and Technology Leaders; Dr. Raymond L. Orbach to Discuss the President's American Competitive Initiative at Supercomputing Conference Sponsored by the Council on Competitiveness.


WASHINGTON -- Dr. Raymond L. Orbach Raymond Lee Orbach is an American physicist and administrator. He currently serves as Under Secretary for Science in the United States Department of Energy.

Orbach received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1956 and a Ph.D.
, Under Secretary for Science at the U.S. Department of Energy, will address U.S. business and technology leaders gathered for a supercomputing conference sponsored by the Council on Competitiveness. Dr. Orbach is the first person appointed by the President to serve in the new office of Under Secretary for Science.

E[acute accent]Dr. Orbach will make an announcement regarding the Department of Energy's support for new tools and techniques that advance scientific research through computational modeling. E[acute accent]Dr. Orbach was sworn in by Secretary Samuel W. Bodman as DOE's first Under Secretary for Science on June 1, 2006. President Bush nominated Orbach for the new position, created by the Energy Policy Act of 2005, on December 13, 2005, and he was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 26, 2006. Dr. Orbach has served as Director of the DOE Office of Science since March 2002.
