The scar on the right side of his neck, so angry when he finished radiation a month ago, was only a slight crease.

Butler took two rounds of early batting practice, a total of 90 swings. He bunted first, then sprayed the outfield with line drives, soft and hard. After about 50 swings, he walked past the third-base dugout, smiled and said, ``Surprised?''

A daily routine that he is sure will have him back in the lineup by Sept. 6, when the Dodgers return from this road trip, included running the bases, shagging Shagging may refer to:

flies and sprinting in the outfield. He hit the ball crisply, so well that teammates shook their heads in admiration. So well that the Dodgers are considering the possibility of a minor-league rehabilitation assignment for him.

On the first pitch Butler saw, he pushed a perfect bunt toward third base. That's when the first chill scampered up the spine of Dave Hansen

.

``Incredible,'' Hansen said afterward. ``It was awesome. I thought, `Oh my gosh.'

``He has muscles he never even knew he had, and he's still got his baseball skills.''

Asked about Butler's target date of Sept. 6, Hansen said, ``No doubt. He definitely still has the Brett Butler touch. The things that made him an outstanding baseball player, he's still got. That was the greatest thing, to see him out there. In a couple days, it'll seem like he was never gone.''

Everything checked out with Butler, who hit on minor-league and college fields College Fields is an estate that will be built in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England in the next few years. , who is recovering from elbow surgery. That is expected to test Butler's baseball condition, as well as the nerves in his right shoulder, damaged during surgery and not yet at full capacity.

``I wanted to see if I could pull the ball,'' Butler said. ``I felt better today than I had. I feel confident with it. I feel like I have more strength every day.

``Where my body is at this point, I'm not a hundred percent. The key, can I play at the major-league level and produce? We're working toward that.''

After an early-afternoon examination of Butler, physical therapist Pat Screnar, who also supervised Butler's workout, noted, ``He came an awfully long way in a relatively short period of time.''

Screnar was particularly curious about the shoulder, and while he found it to be at less-than-full strength, he seemed to be satisfied with the improvement.

``You've got a very determined individual,'' said Screnar, who was asked to explain Butler's dramatic physical improvement. ``That speaks volumes. That probably more than anything.

``It's rather amazing he can gain that much weight, and that's lean muscle mass. He's highly motivated right now. He wants to play.''

Added Screnar: ``I've seen enough today to convince me he can proceed as he has been. He can continue to work out, with his plan to return to playing.''
