DODGERS VICTORY NO WALK THROUGH PARK PITCHER SHOWS ABILITY TO STIFLE COLORADO IN TOUGH SITUATIONS.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

The Dodgers got exactly what they needed Wednesday. One big hit and a solid outing by Chan Ho Park, buoyed by a steady defensive performance, produced a 4-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies For the National Hockey League team (1976 – 1982), now known as the New Jersey Devils, see .

The Dodgers had just four hits and scored two unearned runs on one hit in the third to take a 2-0 lead. With Gary Sheffield and Eric Karros on the disabled list, manufacturing runs any way possible is a daily task. Their success in that endeavor, and stalwart pitching, has put the Dodgers in contention in the National League West.

Park struck out nine, walked six and yielded four hits in 7 2/3 innings. It was a nearly identical performance to his last start, in which he struck out a season-high 10 batters in a 4-1 victory over Houston on Friday.

Todd Helton pulled the Rockies to within 2-1 after smashing a 2-0 pitch over the right center-field wall for his 17th home run of the season. But the Dodgers were able to come up with just enough for insurance.

Park got out of a jam in the first inning. He gave up a leadoff single to Juan Pierre, who wound up on second when Hiram Bocachica, making his second career start in left field, bobbled the ball.

Neifi Perez moved Pierre to third on a sacrifice bunt and Larry Walker drew a walk. But Park got cleanup hitter Helton to pop out to first base and induced Jeff Cirillo, a USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  product, to ground out to third.

The Dodgers held Colorado's Nos. 3, 4 and 5 hitters to just one hit - Helton's homer. Walker went 0 for 3 and Cirillo 0 for 2 with two walks.

Park kept finding ways to get out of trouble and his defense saved him in the eighth. He gave up a leadoff single to Pierre, but then struck out Perez and got Larry Walker to ground out on a spectacular diving play by catcher Paul Lo Duca Paul Anthony Lo Duca (born April 12, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York) is a catcher in Major League Baseball who plays for the New York Mets. He dived to his right, his body flipping around, and robbed Larry Walker of a hit in the eighth inning. However, Park then walked Helton. He had thrown 124 pitches and was replaced by Mike Fetters, who walked Cirillo to load the bases.

But Marquis Grissom caught Todd Walker's ball at the warning track to end the inning.

Park faced a situation with runners at second and third in the fourth inning and escaped that one unscathed as well. After Cirillo hit into a double play, Todd Walker drew a walk and Brooks Kieschnick - who hit two home runs in Colorado's 7-2 victory Tuesday - doubled. Park struck out Brent Mayne to end the inning.

In nine of his previous 11 starts, Park allowed three earned runs or less.
