on his stiff lower back Wednesday, has an anular strain that will sideline him for anywhere from two or three days to more than a week. On the day the club broke camp, the injury only served to further muddle whatever personnel decisions are still to be made.

Major League Baseball (MLB) is the highest level of play in North American professional baseball.
no later than 9 p.m. Saturday, but both the deadline and the rosters are artificial. The Dodgers can continue to make moves in the 40 hours between that deadline and the scheduled first pitch of Monday's season opener with Atlanta, and they likely will.

The Dodgers will go with 12 pitchers, at least initially. That became clear when left-handed reliever Tim Hamulack Timothy William Hamulack (nickname "The Hammer" born November 14, 1976 in Ithaca, New York) is a MLB relief pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hamulack is 6' 4" and weighs 220 pounds. He throws left-handed. High School Years

was recalled from minor-league camp, exactly one day after he was optioned. Because shortstop Cesar Izturis was placed on the 15-day disabled list, the club circumvented the customary 10-day minimum stay in the minors for players optioned.

Right-handed relievers Yhency Brazoban and Franquelis Osoria, who were thought to be battling for a single spot, both have made the club.

Veteran reliever Brian Meadows refused an assignment to Triple-A Las Vegas and became a free agent, and veteran Aaron Sele is taking time to decide whether to accept a similar assignment. Sele said the decision probably won't come for several days.

The Dodgers were expected to purchase the contract of non-roster utility infielder Ramon Martinez, but utility infielder Oscar Robles, who still has all his minor-league options, was in danger of not making the club. But if Furcal furcal /fur·cal/ (fur´k'l) shaped like a fork; forked.

is placed on the DL - and perhaps even if he isn't - Robles Robles is a common surname in the Spanish language meaning oaks, and may refer to:
  • Alfonso García Robles (1911-1991), Mexican diplomat and politician
  • Aurora Robles (born 1980), Mexican fashion model
  • Charlie Robles (born 1943), Puerto Rican musician
 will make the club.

``I'm not going into Opening Day without any utility infielders,'' said manager Grady Little, referring to the fact Martinez will become the starting shortstop if Furcal isn't available. ``That's a guarantee.''

Which probably means that if Furcal is well enough to avoid the DL but still hurting enough to be sidelined for the first few days of the season, the club probably will keep only four outfielders to make room for Robles - a decision made easier by the fact Martinez also can play the outfield in an emergency. That likely would result in Jason Repko starting the season at Las Vegas, if only temporarily.

Meanwhile, catcher Dioner Navarro played in his first Grapefruit League game since straining his right hamstring two weeks ago. He caught five innings in a 4-3, 10-inning victory over Washington and is on track for the opener. That means catching prospect Russell Martin will begin the season at Las Vegas and remain there all year if Navarro stays healthy.
