Romano, 23, will compete for a backup spot this spring. He gives the Dodgers a right-handed batter who can play second base, shortstop and center field. If he doesn't make the opening-day major-league roster, Romano will be sent to Triple-A Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States.  and provide depth if there is an injury or if Joe Thurston doesn't play well at second base.

``There was a chance to add some versatility and athleticism to our club,'' Evans said. ``There aren't that many right-handed hitters who can play all three positions in the middle of the diamond, so he was a very attractive player to us.''

Romano batted .253 (23 for 91) in limited time with Texas and the Rockies last season. He batted .324 with four stolen bases for the Rockies in September.

Allen, 24, batted. 329 with 12 homers for Las Vegas last season. He had a hit in seven at-bats with the Dodgers in September.
