For five innings, the Dodgers endured more of a beatdown than a letdown at the hands of Marlins starter Dontrelle Willis Dontrelle Wayne Willis (born January 12, 1982, in Oakland, California), nicknamed "The D-Train", is a Major League Baseball starting pitcher for the Florida Marlins. , but the way things are going these days, the Dodgers' troubles never seem to last long.

The Dodgers only had two hits through five innings, but Nomar Garciaparra's three RBIs and starter Derek Lowe's solid outing helped them to a 4-2 win over the Marlins in front of 44,749 at Dodger Stadium     [ .

Garciaparra hit a two-run home run in the sixth, his first homer since July 13, to erase a 1-0 deficit. Garciaparra also had a RBI RBI

single in the seventh, as did J.D. Drew, for a 4-1 Dodgers lead.

The Dodgers improved to 16-1 since July 26, the best 17-game stretch in L.A. Dodgers history and the best in franchise history since Brooklyn's run in August 1953.

Monday's victory, and San Diego's loss to San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden , pushed the Dodgers' lead over the Padres in the National League West to 2 1/2 games.

``It says a lot about this team,'' Garciaparra said. ``It's a different guy (coming through) every day and everyone is happy about that.''

Lowe, a hard-luck loser in his previous outing, came back strong as he allowed one run on four hits in seven innings. Lowe (10-8) walked two and struck out two. Lowe also got 17 outs via groundballs.

``He was nasty,'' Willis said of Lowe. ``He definitely outpitched me tonight.''

The Dodgers uncharacteristically committed three errors, and reliever Giovanni Carrara gave up a solo home run to Miguel Olivo in the ninth but pitched the final two innings for his first save since 2004.

``I just really enjoy this time of year,'' Lowe said. ``That doesn't guarantee success, but this is why you play the game. I'm the only one who has lost in his streak and I didn't want to get the second one, too.''

by Willis (7-10), who drove in Florida's first run with a third-inning triple but easily shut down the Dodgers for five innings.

Willis was chased after the Dodgers scored twice in the seventh. He went 6 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits with five walks and nine strikeouts.

``When a guy is pitching that well, you don't get too many opportunities,'' Garciaparra said.

But while Willis looked strong early, Lowe was the one left smiling at the end.

On Aug. 4 in Miami, Lowe allowed just one run and five hits and walked none in a victory over the Marlins, and followed up that game with 8 2/3 strong innings against Colorado on Wednesday, although Lowe took the loss in that game, largely because the Dodger offense contributed just one run.

Lowe easily got through the first two innings Monday with four groundouts and a strikeout, but ran into trouble when Olivo barely beat out an infield single up the middle.

A groundout by Alfredo Amezaga brought up Willis, who entered the game with four hits in 42 at-bats. But Willis blasted Lowe's 1-0 pitch to center for a triple to score Olivo for a 1-0 Florida lead.

The Dodgers managed little early against Willis, who had a turnaround after recent struggles.

Control problems slowed Willis in recent starts, and although a 21-pitch first inning Monday seemed ominous, Willis ran into few obstacles in the early innings.

Julio Lugo singled with one out in the first but didn't advance, and after Russell Martin's two-out infield single in the second, the Dodgers didn't have another baserunner until the crucial sixth inning.

With one out in the sixth, Lugo reached on an infield single when shortstop Hanley Ramirez couldn't get off a throw, and Garciaparra hit Willis' first pitch over the fence in left-center for a 2-1 Dodgers lead.

``He was throwing so well and he's such a great competitor,'' Garciaparra said of Willis. ``I was just trying to keep the inning alive. ... I was just looking for Looking for

 a pitch I could drive.''

Florida missed a big chance to at least tie the game in the seventh when, with runners on second and third and two outs, Lowe got cleanup hitter Mike Jacobs to ground to first to end the inning.

``(Lowe) has been outstanding in his last few outings,'' manager Grady Little said. ``He took us deep into the game on a night when we really needed him to.''
