DODGERS STARTER AGAIN IS STOPPER BROWN PREVENTS SWEEP BY BRAVES DODGERS 5, ATLANTA 1.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

Greg Maddux Gregory Alan Maddux (born April 14, 1966) is a pitcher for the San Diego Padres. He was the first pitcher in Major League history to win the Cy Young Award for four consecutive years (1992-1995), during which he had a 75-29 record with a 1.  might have 276 career victories but Kevin Brown's 187th victory sure was big.

That's because Brown saved the Dodgers from being swept by the Atlanta Braves The Atlanta Braves are a professional baseball team based in Atlanta, Georgia. The Braves are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball's National League. From to the present, the Braves have played in Turner Field.  with another terrific start to outduel Maddux.

Brown allowed one run in seven innings and struck out seven, and Fred McGriff

``It speaks well that we didn't lay down against a tough pitcher and a tough lineup,'' said Brown, who improved to 4-1.

Questions of Brown's health after elbow and back surgeries have seemingly been answered this season. And with run support behind him, Brown - and his 95-mph fastball - is dominant. Even against a lineup as hot as Atlanta's.

``(Brown) does what he's paid to do - stop losing streaks,'' said former Dodger Gary Sheffield

Maddux, 37, and Brown, 38, have won a combined 463 games but apparently it wasn't enough to win over baseball enthusiasts in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  with a crowd of just 29,343.

Maddux (3-5) allowed seven hits and four earned runs in six innings.

Brown, who held Atlanta scoreless through the first five innings, lowered his ERA to 2.51, which is among the top five in the National League. He has the look of the five-time All-Star he is.

``His fastball is as good as I've seen in a long time,'' Dodgers manager Jim Tracy

Reliever Guillermo Mota Guillermo Reynoso Mota (born July 25, 1973 in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic) is a Major League Baseball relief pitcher who is currently on the New York Mets.  added to the Dodgers' strong pitching game with two scoreless innings of relief. He has extended his scoreless streak to 11 1/3 innings.

McGriff, who needs 16 home runs to reach No. 500, has homered in three of his past five games. He also has at least one hit in 11 of his past 14 games.

``Fred led us off and gave us a little breathing room and that was must much appreciated,'' Brown said.

The first baseman started the season awfully slow - his batting average batting average

dipped below .200. But McGriff appears to be back on track.

Shawn Green was 10 for 19 with three home runs in his career against Maddux before Wednesday. Maddux retired Green in his first two at-bats but Green again got the best of Maddux with a two-run double in the fifth inning for a 4-0 Dodgers lead.

``I didn't make a very good pitch to Shawn Green,'' Maddux said. ``It looked like he guessed right and you've got to tip your cap to him.''

Brown is intense to say the least, as evidenced by the hole he punched in the clubhouse wall in Cincinnati and the shelf he tore off the hinges in Montreal. But reliever Tom Martin chalked that up to his competitiveness.

``If you sit down and talk to him like we do, you'd see that he's just a good, old country boy that likes to hunt and fish,'' Martin said. ``But he just wants to win so bad. He's the most competitive guy I've met.''

Dave Roberts missed Wednesday's game with a strained right hamstring - the same one that kept him out for a week already this season.

Roberts will benefit from today's off day and is expected to return to the lineup Friday.
