That's because the inconsistent Dodgers are no easier to figure out now than they were on Opening Day. Starting pitching - just about the only reason the Dodgers are as good as they are - faltered badly Sunday, and the big hits came from the bottom of the lineup, an area of great consternation for three months. It all added up to another frustrating loss to the Diamondbacks, even though one familiar face shined. Houlton for six runs in two innings as they took two of three games in the series. Houlton, a bright spot in a rough month of June for the Dodgers, had earned rave reviews from manager Jim Tracy, but in his first start since Tracy made him a permanent part of the rotation, Houlton had the worst results of his six-start career, one day after Derek Lowe's awful outing. Lowe at least completed three innings, but Houlton was fortunate just to make it out of the second. Craig Counsell started the game with a double and things never got any better for Houlton (4-2). Meanwhile, the only big hits from the Dodgers lineup came from No. 7 hitter Mike Edwards, who hit an RBI double in the second, and No. 8 hitter Jason Phillips, who hit a two-run home run in the fourth. Arizona starter Brad Halsey (5-7), who made his major-league debut at Dodger Stadium last June as a member of the New York Yankees Halsey scattered the three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings, walked two and struck out three. The Dodgers and Diamondbacks won't face each other again until late September, and that's sad news for Green, who has had tremendous success this season against his former team. Green has hit five of his 14 home runs this season against the Dodgers, including the one Sunday that was the first big blow in a nightmarish inning for Houlton. After that, Alex Cintron doubled, Jose Cruz walked, Royce Clayton hit an RBI single and Chris Snyder hit a two-run double - all with two outs - to make it 5-0 until Halsey mercifully struck out to end the inning. The second went a little better, but Green's RBI single gave Arizona a six-run lead. Houlton left after that, having allowed six hits, two walks and one wild pitch to go with two strikeouts. Relievers Scott Erickson and Franquelis Osoria, one of whom could be out of a major-league job when Odalis Perez returns from the disabled list Tuesday, allowed only one run in five combined innings. J.D. Drew, who was hit by a pitch on the left wrist by Halsey in the fifth inning but stayed in the game, left after six innings for a defensive replacement. The Dodgers had other chances that they couldn't take advantage of. They got the leadoff man on base in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings but didn't score a run in any of those innings. The two Dodgers selected to the All-Star Game didn't fare so well either. Shortstop Cesar Izturis missed the game with a sore right hamstring and second baseman Jeff Kent went 0 for 4 and grounded into a double play.
