"I'm very pleased to agree to a three-year deal," Nomo said through his interpreter. "This is what I wanted. Now I won't have to worry about the next three years. I can concentrate on baseball during that time."

Nomo's contract is worth $600,000 for this season, $900,000 in 1997 and $2.8 million in 1998, when he would have been eligible for arbitration. "It could," Moorad said. "We're reasonably close in some respects, though there remains some distance."

In the case of Nomo, Fred Claire, the Dodgers executive vice president, was able to quickly close ground on negotiations. Only Wednesday, Claire said that there was "not much to report." Nomo signed fewer than 24 hours later, apparently not long after a recent discussion between Nomura and Dodgers president Peter O'Malley.

    Nomura was unavailable for comment.

"Negotiations were very smooth," Claire said. "I pay a great tribute to Hideo and Nomura. Hideo was in camp before the camp started."
