DODGERS RELIEVERS FAIL THEM AGAIN COLORADO RALLY PERPETUATES L.A.'S MISERABLE TRIP COLORADO 11, DODGERS 8.

DENVER - Dodgers manager Jim Tracy
This article is about the baseball manager. For the member of the Tennessee Senate, see Jim Tracy (politician).

Now, if he can figure out what to do about a slumping bullpen that was battered again on Tuesday.

The Dodgers rallied to compensate for Eric Gagne's poor start, but it amounted to nothing as the Colorado Rockies For the National Hockey League team (1976 – 1982), now known as the New Jersey Devils, see .

The Rockies can sweep the three-game series this afternoon. The Dodgers have lost six of eight on their trip and are 8-15 on the road this season. The Dodgers (24-22) entered the series leading the National League West but could leave Colorado in last place.

The once-reliable bullpen allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings and this time right-hander Matt Herges Matthew Tyler Herges (born April 1, 1970, in Champaign, Illinois) is a Major League Baseball pitcher. He is an alumnus of Illinois State University.

Signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1992, Herges would make his Major League Baseball debut with

The Rockies added an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth on second baseman Mark Grudzielanek's throwing error.

The 11 runs are the most the Dodgers have allowed since the 20-1 pounding they absorbed May 5 in Chicago.

With Eric Karros unavailable because of a back strain and lefty Denny Neagle throwing, Tracy went to an unconventional lineup. Paul LoDuca started at first base and batted leadoff. He went 1 for 4 with a two-run homer and three RBI, which might lead to more games atop the order.

In a lineup dominated by right-handers, shortstop Jeff Reboulet batted second so Grudzielanek could drop to third. Tracy wanted more RBI opportunities for left fielder Gary Sheffield, and Grudzielanek provided chances. His RBI double in the sixth inning tied the score 6-6 and was the third time he was on base.

However, Tracy's move didn't translate into run production by Sheffield. He was on base three times but didn't drive in a run.

Neagle and Gagne put on a display of how to keep your fielders on their heels as both worked as quickly as Caltrans does fixing Los Angeles-area freeways.

Neagle and Gagne each threw nine innings worth of pitches, but neither made it past the fifth inning. They labored on nearly every pitch.

Neagle allowed three runs, all in the second inning, in five innings. However, he threw 108 pitches and had two runners on base in every inning but the fourth, which forced manager Buddy Bell to turn to his bullpen in the sixth inning.

Gagne, who pitched well in his past three starts, was worse. Striving for pitch efficiency, Gagne threw 99 of them in 4 1/3 innings. He allowed six runs, walked three, hit a pair of batters and allowed runs in three of the five innings he pitched.
