The Dodgers thought they had gotten away with one.

They thought they had cheated disaster Saturday at San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden , when they blew a six-run lead, forced themselves into three extra innings Noun 1. extra innings - overtime play until one team is ahead at the end of an inning; e.g. baseball
extra time, overtime - playing time beyond regulation, to break a tie
, exhausted their bullpen, teetered at least once on the brink of catastrophe and somehow still managed to come out on top, all of which left them quite pleased with themselves when the whole mess was finally over.

On Tuesday night, the bill came.

The price was a hideous, 15-3 pounding by Philadelphia in front of 45,074 at Dodger Stadium     [ , a game in which the Phillies banged out 26 hits to match the most by a Dodgers opponent in the 50seasons since the team moved to LosAngeles from Brooklyn.

It was a game that, as crazy as this might sound, wasn't nearly as close as the final score would indicate.

Mark Hendrickson Mark Allan Hendrickson (born June 23, 1974 in Mount Vernon, Washington, U.S.) is an American professional athlete and is one of just 10 athletes to play in both Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association. , the gallant left-hander who was forced into unscheduled action against the Giants Saturday, went back to a starting role against the Phillies, just three days after he retired six of seven batters in the 10th and 11th innings and wound up getting the win. Whether it was due to his disrupted routine or simply to a bunch of pitches that didn't seem to have much on them, he was torched Tuesday, to the tune of seven earned runs on 11 hits over three-plus hideous innings.

Hendrickson gave up three runs in the first, pitched out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the second, threw a perfect third and then collapsed in the fourth, giving up four more runs without retiring a batter.

"I don't think (the previous game) was a factor," Hendrickson said. "It was just one of those things where I went out there and really didn't have much. Itried to battle through it. After Igot out of the second inning, Ithought maybe I had tamed them a little bit. But give them credit. That is a good hitting team overe there, and they swung the bats well."

Meanwhile, with the bullpen still not fully recovered from the six innings it pitched collectively on Saturday or an entire three-game series with the Giants when it was called upon some 13 times, Dodgers manager Grady Little William Grady Little (born March 30, 1950 in Abilene, Texas) is a manager in Major League Baseball. He guided the Boston Red Sox from 2002 to 2003, and has been manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2006.  was so determined not to further tax his relievers that he allowed Eric Stults Eric William Stults (born December 9, 1979 in Plymouth, Indiana) is a pitcher in Major League Baseball who plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Stults played in college for NAIA Bethel College (Indiana).  to hit for himself with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the fourth inning. Predictably, Stults took a called third strike.

"At that point, we were just trying to put a Band-Aid on it," Little

said. "We had to try to get as many innings out of that kid as we could. We weren't in any shape to put a pinch-hitter up there. If you do that, you're going to see (setup man Jonathan) Broxton and (closer Takashi) Saito in there for two innings apiece."

With his only job being to eat innings, Stults still couldn't choke down Verb 1. choke down - suppress; "He choked down his rage"

more than three of them, during which he gave up four runs on eight hits.

Given that the Dodgers trailed by seven runs when Stults' spot came up, no one could really blame Little for sending the helpless left-hander to the plate -- even though the boos and catcalls cat·call

coming from the stands indicated that a lot of people wanted to. But the worst part was, because Stults was almost as inept as Hendrickson had been, Little still ended up needing Rudy Seanez, Broxton and Joe Beimel Joseph Ronald Beimel (born April 19, 1977) is a relief pitcher for the Major League Baseball Los Angeles Dodgers.  just to get through the game.

All at a time when the Dodgers' next off day is still almost two weeks away.

The good news for the division-leading Dodgers is that no matter how many hits and runs they gave up and no matter how much of their dignity they sacrificed, it still was just one loss. The even-better news was that second-place San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. Hendrickson (4-5) was far from the only one to feel the Phillies' wrath. Four of the first five hitters in their lineup had three hits each, as did starting pitcher Noun 1. starting pitcher - (baseball) a pitcher who starts in a baseball game

Shane Victorino, who was so lightly regarded as a Dodgers prospect that they let him get away in the Rule 5 draft twice, went 5 for 7 with a triple. Aaron Rowand went 5 for 6 with a home run and three doubles.

Durbin (1-2), who had been waived three times by three teams this season, came in with no career wins, no career hits and a 13.50 ERA for the season. He held the Dodgers to a run on six hits over six innings.
