DODGERS NOTES : ASHLEY GOES ON DL FOR 15 DAYS.Byline: Tim Brown Timothy Donell Brown (born July 22, 1966) is a retired wide receiver, who played in the National Football League. He spent sixteen years with the Oakland Raiders, during which he established himself as one of the League's most prolific wide receivers. Daily News Staff Writer Dodgers left fielder Billy Ashley Billy Manual Ashley (Born July 11, 1970) in Trenton, Michigan, is a former Major League Baseball outfielder. Ashley was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 3rd round of the 1988 MLB Draft. He started his professional career with the Gulf Coast Dodgers in 1988 and 1989. arrived at Joe Robbie Stadium on Sunday afternoon to the news that he was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Only Saturday night, he said he thought his right hamstring was mildly strained, and that he expected to play Tuesday in Atlanta. Part of a two-player platoon with left-handed hitting Todd Hollandsworth Todd Mathew Hollandsworth (born April 20, 1973 in Dayton, Ohio) is an outfielder in Major League Baseball. Previously, Hollandsworth played with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1995-2000), Colorado Rockies (2000-2002), Texas Rangers (2002), Florida Marlins (2003), Chicago Cubs , Ashley's next scheduled start was against Braves left-hander Tom Glavine Thomas Michael Glavine (born March 25 1966 in Concord, Massachusetts) is an American left-handed starting pitcher in Major League Baseball. He is currently a free agent, having last pitched for the New York Mets. . Instead, he won't play for at least two weeks. Utility infielder A utility infielder is a baseball player, usually someone who does not have a regular starting role on the team, who is capable of playing more than one of the four defensive infield positions: second base, third base, shortstop, and less typically first base. Juan Castro Juan Castro (born Juan Gabriel Castro in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico on June 20, 1972) is a Major League Baseball infielder. He is a currently a shortstop for the Cincinnati Reds. Castro bats right-handed, throws right-handed, and wears number 9. was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to take Ashley's place on the 25-man roster. Castro, who can play third base, second base and shortstop, batted .372 in 14 games and 43 at-bats for the Dukes. The Dodgers were limited in what they could bring up, because outfielders Rick Parker and Billy Lott and infielders Mike Busch and Garey Ingram are injured. It is somewhat odd that the Dodgers would disable Ashley so quickly. Despite the platoon situation, Ashley cannot be used as a defensive replacement and rarely is used to pinch-hit. Therefore, the club had until today, and perhaps Tuesday, to make a decision. Ashley strained his left hamstring in spring and missed 11 days. The injury means rookies Hollandsworth and Roger Cedeno will take over the platoon in left field. Manager Tom Lasorda said the position is still there to be won, if someone were to distance himself from the others. Hollandsworth is hitting .182 in 33 at-bats, after a spring in which he put up similar numbers. Cedeno is hitting .308 in 13 at-bats. However, he is 0 for 6 against right-handed pitchers. ``We're going to have to wait and see,'' Lasorda said. Add roster move: The recall of Castro and the severe slump of third baseman Mike Blowers are not related, Lasorda said. But he doesn't know what to make of Blowers, who is batting .155 and has 21 strikeouts in 58 at-bats. He also has four errors, tying him with shortstop Greg Gagne for the team high. ``To me, it appears like he's swinging at a lot of bad balls,'' Lasorda said. ``I'm undecided if we should give Mike a day off or or let him work it out. That's the thing.'' Notes: Marlins Quilvio Veras, Devon White and Charles Johnson received their Gold Gloves in a pregame ceremony. White won his in the American League, with the Toronto Blue Jays "Blue Jays" redirects here. For other uses, see Blue Jay (disambiguation).. Bert Campanaris hit an inside-the-park home run In baseball parlance, an inside-the-park home run or "leg home run" is a play where a hitter scores a home run without hitting the ball out of play. Discussion To score an inside-the-park home run the player must run, round, and touch all four bases before a fielder tags , though the ball was misplayed in right field. ``If that guy ever hit a home run off me I'd slit my throat,'' Lasorda said with a laugh.
