Scully said that he placed Allen's skill alongside that of Barber, with whom Scully broadcast Dodgers games.

``He was special,'' Scully said of Allen. ``In New York New York, state, United States

``He became the team. And I'll tell you what, 50 years ago he had a voice that was magnificent.''

Scully and Allen announced their first World Series together in 1953, but the most memorable for Scully was 10 years later, when the Dodgers swept the Yankees.

``When he said `Gone,''' Scully said, ``I could hear his voice had come apart. It was like a windshield shattering. I felt so badly.''

Scully took the mike for the final innings of what was to be a Dodgers championship, and Yankees fans assumed Allen gave up hope on the Yankees and refused to continue.

``For a long time after that series,'' Scully said, ``people would stop me and ask, because they were sure Mel was emotionally upset because the Yankees were going to lose.''

      Scully laughed at the memory.

``Boy, he was great,'' Scully said softly. ``He and Red.''
