``It's not a true story,'' Nomo said through an interpreter. ``I never thought about getting a divorce. My wife is very fine.''

The Taishu was rumored to have a photograph of Nomo and the woman during what it claimed to be a romantic moment. However, Nomo's agent, Don Nomura, has threatened legal action against the publication, and it appears as though the alleged photograph will not be published.

The incident is the latest in a series of skirmishes between Nomo and the often aggressive Japanese news outlets that hound him.

After his first start this season, Nomo refused to speak to sportswriters because photographers distracted him the day before. In an earlier episode, Nomo bought a condominium in Japan, only to find the location and blueprints in the newspaper that same week.

Gagne returns: Shortstop Greg Gagne, on a rehabilitation assignment in Triple-A Albuquerque since Sunday, will return to the club today. Milt Thompson is the odd man out. Gagne will be reinstated from the disabled list today and Thompson has been outrighted.

Rookie Juan Castro was impressive during Gagne's month-long recovery from a sprained left ankle, and will stay with the club as a utility infielder.

``It just happens, man,'' Thompson said after Wednesday's game. ``It is a business decision. I haven't played well. You have to take it like a man, which I am.''

Thompson was given notice.

``I've had a couple meetings with (management),'' Thompson said, ``and they said they were displeased dis·please
