About to throw for the first time this month, Butler anticipated pain. He just didn't know how much. He hoped for the impossible - no pain.

For 12 minutes, he played catch with physical therapist Pat Screnar, reaching a distance of 50 feet between them.

``I didn't have the kind of pain I had when I hurt it,'' said Butler, who has been sidelined with torn cartilage cartilage (kär`təlĭj), flexible semiopaque connective tissue without blood vessels or nerve cells. It forms part of the skeletal system in humans and in other vertebrates, and is also known as gristle.  in his left shoulder. ``There's a little bit of pain, but for the first day I was really pleased.''

Butler and Screnar will make a decision today on when Butler will throw again. Screnar said Butler has been making good progress.

``I think Fred will go along either way,'' Greenberg said, adding that Kirby was upset because he felt he wasn't used enough.

``This is the year he thought he'd get a chance,'' Greenberg said of his client, who was optioned to Albuquerque after Tuesday's game.

Claire disagreed, pointing out Kirby's 11 pinch-hit at-bats were plenty. Claire said he understands the 33-year-old Kirby's reluctance to go back to the minors and the Dodgers would not stand in his way.

``If there's an opportunity for Wayne at the major-league level, I would work to make that happen for him,'' Claire said.
