DODGERS NOTEBOOK : WAYNE KIRBY BACK WITH CLUB AFTER ATTENDING DAD'S FUNERAL.

A major-league travel schedule and a long flight from Denver to Williamsburg, Va., couldn't prepare Wayne Kirby Wayne Leonard Kirby (born January 22, 1964 in Williamsburg, Virginia, USA), is a former professional baseball player who played in the Major Leagues primarily as an outfielder from 1991-1998.  for the short ride home from the airport.

The new Dodger suddenly left Colorado last Saturday because of the death of his father. The utility outfielder, who returned to the team Friday, said that ride was the most difficult.

``I thought about a lot of things,'' Kirby said. ``It was a hard trip. The flight was long and driving home was worse.''

The elder Kirby - also named Wayne - died on Saturday morning at age 53 of a heart attack. Kirby, who had no history of heart problems, died in his sleep. Several hours later, Kirby's mother paged her son in Colorado with an emergency signal.

``I knew then something was wrong,'' Kirby said. ``When you get a page from your mother and it's `911', you get worried.''

Kirby spent the past five days in Virginia and will return home after the season. The ex-Cleveland Indian got a chance to see his brother, Terry, a running back with the Miami Dolphins.

``This was my toughest trip home,'' Kirby said. ``Hopefully (baseball) can take my mind off of things. Life goes on.''

Foxy afternoon: Fox Network's telecast of today's Dodgers-Rockies game brings a rarity to Dodger Stadium     [ , a Saturday afternoon home game. The Dodgers' last was Oct. 2, 1993, when the club eliminated the Giants from Western Division contention.
