DODGERS NOTEBOOK : THOUGH FOOT HURTS, DESHIELDS BACK.

Delino DeShields
Delino Lamont DeShields (born January 15 1969 in Seaford, Delaware) is a former second baseman in Major League Baseball who played for the Montreal Expos (1990-93), Los Angeles Dodgers (1994-96), St.
returned to the Dodgers' lineup Friday night, unencumbered by any protective devices to shield the top of his right foot.

``My foot hurts,'' said DeShields, who sat out three games after fouling a ball off the top of his instep instep /in·step/ (-step) the dorsal part of the arch of the foot.

Monday night. ``But it hurts worse when I put something on it. I just want to be able to move around.''

DeShields says he was glad that Chad Fonville Chad Everette Fonville (born March 5, 1971, in Jacksonville, North Carolina) was a Major League Baseball infielder.

Drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 11th round of the 1992 MLB amateur draft, Fonville would make his Major League Baseball debut with the Montreal
got some playing time at second base during his absence. And DeShields, who is signed only through this season and has endured his share of frustrations with the Dodgers, pondered aloud his future.

``You never know what's going to happen (in '97),'' he said. ``I'm planning on playing here, but I would like to see Chad play every day before he gets to be 30 years old.

``It might be time for me to try something different.''

It's advisable to take DeShields' words with a grain of salt. At this time last year, while battling a hip injury, he discussed the prospect of retirement - at age 26.

Familiar faces: Pitcher Chan Ho Park on Friday afternoon dropped by the Los Angeles hotel of the Korean national baseball team, which will visit Dodger Stadium tonight.

Park, a member of that team in '93, said, ``There are only a couple of players on the national team that I played with. Guys my own age this year finished school and went into the professional leagues in Korea. Many players change.''

The Korean team, in preparation for the Olympics this summer in Atlanta, is practicing at USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  and will be on a tour of California, playing college and minor-league teams.

Also: Brett Butler, at home in Georgia recovering from a tonsillectomy tonsillectomy /ton·sil·lec·to·my/ (ton?si-lek´tah-me) excision of a tonsil.
