DODGERS NOTEBOOK : MARTINEZ READY TO REJOIN ROTATION.

Ramon Martinez Ramon Martinez is the name of several people:
  • Ramon Martinez (fencing instructor), a fencing instructor in New York City
  • Ramón Martínez (baseball infielder)
  • Ramón Martínez (baseball pitcher), brother of Pedro Martinez
had a strong second rehabilitation start Thursday night and will be in the rotation when the Dodgers return for their 10-game homestand. He probably will start Tuesday night against the Montreal Expos The Montreal Expos (French: Les Expos de Montréal) were a Major League Baseball team located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada from 1969 until 2004. After the 2004 season, the franchise relocated to Washington, D.C. and became the Washington Nationals. .

Pitching coach Dave Wallace attended Martinez's start in Vero Beach Vero Beach (vēr`o), city (1990 pop. 17,350), seat of Indian River co., E Fla., on Indian River (a lagoon and part of the Intracoastal Waterway); founded c.1888, inc. 1919. , where Martinez pitched seven innings and allowed five hits, no earned runs and no walks. He had 10 strikeouts. He threw 102 pitches, covered first base twice and fielded his position well.

``He threw the ball well,'' Wallace said.

Martinez has been on the disabled list since April 6, when he strained his groin running out a batted ball "Fly ball" and "line drive" redirect here. For the dog sport, see flyball.

on a cold afternoon in Chicago. Tuesday's start falls on Chan Ho Park's scheduled start, but Wallace and manager Tom Lasorda did not reveal who would leave the rotation. Park, who could start Monday on four days' rest, is 3-2 with a 2.31 ERA in six starts. Astacio, who is scheduled for Monday, is 2-3 with a 2.88 ERA in seven.

``I know what we're going to do,'' Lasorda said.

He didn't say.

Both have bullpen experience.

Visiting Butler: Club executive vice president Fred Claire Fred Claire (b. October 5, 1935 in Jamestown, OH) is a former major league baseball executive who served in numerous roles for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1969-1998 including the role of general manager from 1987-1998.  spent Wednesday in Duluth, Ga., where he visited with Brett Butler, awaiting cancer surgery on May 21.

``They (Butler and his family) are doing good,'' Claire said. ``You couldn't expect them to do any better than they are. It's a very difficult situation.''

Claire said Butler is in pain, but, ``He was interested in the team. He wanted to know what the lineup was like. All the questions.''

Claire met the team Thursday in St. Louis.

``The whole trip there, going to Atlanta, there were a lot of thoughts I had on Brett,'' he said. ``It's something I wanted to do. It was an emotional trip.''

Add Claire: Claire will not trade for a center fielder or, apparently, a leadoff hitter. Rookie Roger Cedeno will do both, for the time being.

``The key part of that is the strongest area we have is in our outfielders, along with our pitchers,'' Claire said. ``It's not as through we're in a position to rush somebody. All of those people (Cedeno, Todd Hollandsworth, Billy Ashley), they have earned an opportunity. Now that is here for them. They know that, we know that.''

Slump overboard: Several Dodgers players took advantage of Thursday's off day to visit one of St. Louis' floating casinos. When it was suggested that the activity might have been a good way to leave behind what so far has been a forgettable for·get·ta·ble
