DODGERS NOTEBOOK : MARTINEZ ADJUSTS TO PAL'S DEPARTURE.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Daily News Staff Writer

Ramon Martinez Ramon Martinez is the name of several people:
  • Ramon Martinez (fencing instructor), a fencing instructor in New York City
  • Ramón Martínez (baseball infielder)
  • Ramón Martínez (baseball pitcher), brother of Pedro Martinez
was waiting in the lobby of the Grand Hyatt on Monday night for his best friend to come down so they could go to dinner.

Finally, Martinez walked to a house phone and called Pedro Astacio's room.

``He told me Fred Claire Fred Claire (b. October 5, 1935 in Jamestown, OH) is a former major league baseball executive who served in numerous roles for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1969-1998 including the role of general manager from 1987-1998.  wanted to talk to him,'' Martinez recalled Thursday. ``I knew something was happening. It's not very often you are called to the general manager's room.''

Astacio had been traded to the Colorado Rockies For the National Hockey League team (1976 – 1982), now known as the New Jersey Devils, see .

For two days, Martinez was too upset to speak about the trade. It was an emotion-filled week for him. On Wednesday, he made his first start after being on the disabled list since June 15 (retroactive) with a tear in his rotator cuff rotator cuff

Martinez and Astacio would go to dinner almost every night on the road. In the off-season in their native Dominican Republic Dominican Republic (dəmĭn`ĭkən), republic (2005 est. pop. 8,950,000), 18,700 sq mi (48,442 sq km), West Indies, on the eastern two thirds of the island of Hispaniola. The capital and largest city is Santo Domingo. , they were always at each others' homes or out together.

When teammates first heard about the trade, one of the first thoughts most had was how Martinez would cope without Astacio and vice versa VICE VERSA. On the contrary; on opposite sides. . Manager Bill Russell and Claire met with Martinez on Tuesday to talk about the move.

This was not the first time Martinez had someone close to him traded. His bother, Pedro, was with the Dodgers before being sent to Montreal in 1993. Martinez has learned well that baseball is a business.

to the bullpen the day before. Astacio (7-9) had lasted just four innings in each of his previous two starts. With Martinez's imminent return and Tom Candiotti's sustained effectiveness, Astacio had been displaced.

A few hours later, Astacio was a starter again.

``I told him to keep doing the same thing,'' Martinez said. ``He is probably going to be the No. 1 or No. 2 starter on that team. . . . Maybe (in Colorado) he won't feel too much pressure.''

Martinez laughed as he remembered finding out Astacio would be pitching at Coors Field, where a hitters have a decided advantage in the mile-high altitude.

``I asked him where they sent him,'' Martinez recalled. ``He said, `To the desert.' ''

Substituting: The Dodgers on Thursday night recalled left-hander Dennis Reyes to help fill in during this stretch of seven games in five days. Reyes will start today against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Dodgers will decide today who to eliminate to make room for Reyes.

Reyes, who was 2-2 with a 9.39 ERA in his four starts since rejoining Triple-A Albuquerque, will likely remain with the Dodgers for just one start, though Russell did not rule out his staying. Russell said it depends how the staff is used between now and Tuesday.

Candiotti left his start early Thursday so he could be ready to start one of Monday's games in Pittsburgh. Ramon Martinez will start the other game.

Young No. 1: A day after pledging his allegiance to Otis Nixon as his leadoff hitter, Russell dropped Nixon down in the order to No. 8 and moved Eric Young up a spot to No. 1.

Young responded by going 2 for 3 with a run, a stolen base and a walk. He is now 5 for 11 in three games as a Dodger. Nixon, acquired from Toronto on Aug. 12, is hitless in his past 20 at-bats and is 3 for 31 with his new team.

``We have three leadoff hitters,'' Russell said, throwing former leadoff man Brett Butler in the mix. ``You see what we can do.''
