DODGERS NOTEBOOK : DESPITE STRUGGLES, CLAIRE MAINTAINS BELIEF IN CLUB.

Fred Claire Fred Claire (b. October 5, 1935 in Jamestown, OH) is a former major league baseball executive who served in numerous roles for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1969-1998 including the role of general manager from 1987-1998.  isn't convinced. Not after 116 games. Not after 96 errors. Not after countless runners left in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on  by previously capable hitters.

Claire, the Dodgers executive vice president, said Saturday that the real Dodgers have yet to show themselves. Of course, he has to say that. He works for the club.

``I believe in the team,'' Claire said. ``I believe in the character of the team. The ability of the team. Do I think it's going to be easy? By no means.

``If we don't get the maximum out of every participant of this team, then we will fall short.''

He admitted that the club's wobbly, 3-5 start to August is mystifying mys·ti·fy

, given that last year's experience should have the opposite effect. Many of these same players won the National League West after what most observers considered four months of underachievement.

``We're a team, really, at a good age, at a good stage,'' Claire said. ``They have had that experience. They've been through that, and now it's right in front of us.''

Showed him: In the two games since he was benched for being late to Wednesday's game in Pittsburgh, Raul Mondesi is 0 for 9 with three strikeouts.

``He's just an aggressive hitter,'' manager Bill Russell Noun 1. Bill Russell - United States basketball center (born in 1934)
William Felton Russell, Russell
said. ``He's always been that way, (especially against) breaking ball after breaking ball. He's going to have to be a patient hitter.''

Russell said he did not think the disciplinary action had anything to do with the hitless streak.

It's a physics thing: Dodgers rookie Todd Hollandsworth Todd Mathew Hollandsworth (born April 20, 1973 in Dayton, Ohio) is an outfielder in Major League Baseball. Previously, Hollandsworth played with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1995-2000), Colorado Rockies (2000-2002), Texas Rangers (2002), Florida Marlins (2003), Chicago Cubs  hit his eighth home run on the road Saturday. He has none at Dodger Stadium     [ . Asked for the reason, Hollandsworth shrugged and said, ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Also: Dodgers right-hander Tom Candiotti
Thomas Caesar Candiotti (born August 31, 1957 in Walnut Creek, California) is a former right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball who was known for his knuckleball.
, in Single A rehabilitating his sore right elbow, allowed eight hits and four runs in six innings for the San Bernardino Stampede. Candiotti will be activated, probably in time to start Wednesday in St. Louis. Right-hander Jim Bruske is the likely candidate to return to Triple-A Albuquerque. . . . Tim Wallach, apparently healed from his broken rib, is ready to join the club. Third baseman Mike Busch or utility player Rick Parker are bound for Albuquerque. . . . Third baseman Dave Hansen, whose wife, Julie, gave birth to the couple's second child on Wednesday, is expected to return to the club in time for today's game. . . . The Dodgers are 110-109 at Riverfront Stadium. Los Angeles is the only National League club with a winning record at the ballpark.
