DODGERS NOTEBOOK : CENTINELA WAS WHERE THE ACTION WAS.

The emergency room at Centinela Hospital Medical Center was the place to be on Friday night.

and Todd Hollandsworth Todd Mathew Hollandsworth (born April 20, 1973 in Dayton, Ohio) is an outfielder in Major League Baseball. Previously, Hollandsworth played with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1995-2000), Colorado Rockies (2000-2002), Texas Rangers (2002), Florida Marlins (2003), Chicago Cubs  and Atlanta Braves The Atlanta Braves are a professional baseball team based in Atlanta, Georgia. Smoltz was examined by Dr. Frank Jobe and Saturday morning wore a soft cast.

Hollandsworth, who was hit in the left elbow by a Smoltz pitch in the fourth inning, was X-rayed and was found to have a contusion CONTUSION, med. jurisp. He probably won't play until Tuesday, at the earliest, when the Dodgers begin a nine-game, three-city trip in Pittsburgh.

When Hollandsworth arrived at the emergency room, he was greeted by Butler.

Due to fly from Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  to Atlanta on Saturday morning, Butler and his wife, Eveline, were in a restaurant Friday night. While drinking a milkshake, Butler began to vomit blood. There was pain, Butler said, ``and there was blood everywhere.''

He immediately called Dr. Michael Mellman, who advised they go to Centinela. A scab was found to have torn from the side of Butler's throat, which caused the bleeding.

``I think I over-reacted a little bit,'' Butler said Sunday afternoon from his home north of Atlanta.

However, Butler's three days in San Diego and Mexico were difficult. His weight is down to 145 pounds, 16 below his playing weight. He received intravenous medication and Laetrile laetrile (lā`ətrĭl'), name given to the chemical amygdalin, a substance derived from an extract of the kernels of many fruits, notably apricots, bitter almonds, and peaches.  treatments to bolster his immune system immune system

, but, he said, ``It seems to have gotten worse.''

Butler, who was diagnosed with throat cancer in early May, had subsequent surgery and on Monday completed a six-week program of radiation treatment. He continues to believe he can return to the Dodgers before the end of the season, and will begin rehabilitating Monday in New Orleans.

Add Smoltz: Smoltz said Saturday that he would pitch again, ``as soon as I can put a glove on and defend myself.''

Asked how many starts he might miss, Smoltz shrugged and said, ``Hopefully none. Maybe one.''

His return might be complicated if he cannot swing a bat.

``It has to be my own judgment,'' he said.

Add Hollandsworth: Hollandsworth was a little surprised to run into the Butlers, needless to say, and on the way out was told, ``Smoltz is on his way in. I said, `No way.' ''

Hollandsworth's left elbow was swollen and stiff Saturday, though not nearly as bad as when it initially was hit by the Smoltz fastball. Plate umpire Eric Gregg thought Hollandsworth had fouled off the pitch.

``Gregg wanted to look at it,'' Hollandsworth said. ``I said, `No,' because I thought he was going to touch it. It was instant slap-happy.''

Oddly, Hollandsworth and Smoltz attended a barbecue in June - at Butler's home in Duluth, Ga.

``I saw that Hollandsworth's going to be all right,'' Smoltz said. ``Man, it was a weird game.''

He hadn't seen anything yet. The Dodgers and Braves played 18 innings Saturday.
