DODGERS NOTEBOOK : CANDIOTTI IS HELPING DODGERS AND HIMSELF.

Byline: Kevin Acee Daily News Staff Writer

Tom Candiotti
Thomas Caesar Candiotti (born August 31, 1957 in Walnut Creek, California) is a former right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball who was known for his knuckleball.

. Besides helping out the Dodgers, Candiotti knows it won't hurt an effort to market himself as an effective starter.

After spending the first 2-1/2 months of the season in the bullpen, Candiotti made his first start of 1997 - but 142nd of his career - a stellar one. He allowed four hits in seven shutout innings Saturday as the Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants The San Francisco Giants are a Major League Baseball team based in San Francisco, California that currently play in the National League West Division. ``This might be a small window of opportunity to show I can still assume the role of a starter,'' Candiotti said. ``When you're relegated to mop-up duty there's not a whole lot of opportunity to show other clubs you can pitch.''

Showcase II: Right-handed reliever Mike Harkey Michael "Mike" Anthony Harkey (born October 25, 1966 in San Diego, California), was a former starting pitcher in Major League Baseball. He used to play for the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies,Oakland Athletics, California Angels and the Los Angeles Dodgers. , whose contract was purchased Monday from Triple-A Albuquerque, is honored to be a part of the Dodgers' vaunted vaunt

But he knows his role here. He knows he won't be around if Martinez returns this season. With expansion coming, he figures this is a great chance to show he can still pitch in the majors.

``To be one of the 12 pitchers on this staff, you've got to take that as you could pitch anywhere,'' said Harkey, a seven-year veteran who last pitched in the majors in 1995 with the Angels. ``You know there will be a lot of people watching People watching or crowd watching is a hobby of some people to watch those around them and their interactions. Chance: Bill Russell has no choice, and Karim Garcia likes it that way.

In addition to his six starts in left field, the 21-year-old, called up June 13, has pinch hit three times. All three times have been with two outs in the Dodgers' final at-bat. The first time was against the Angels' Troy Percival, the next two against the Giants' Rod Beck.

Those are two pretty good closers. Garcia struck out all three times, twice ending the game.

``That shows the manager has some confidence in me,'' Garcia said of being put in those situations.

It also shows Garcia is the Dodgers' only left-handed big-hit threat off the bench. Nelson Liriano is a switch hitter without much power potential.

``I've got to expect it,'' Garcia said. ``I'm the only left-handed hitter on the bench.''

The closer: Todd Worrell is expected to be out at least a few more days with a stomach virus. The latest complication is that he has become dehydrated de·hy·drate
