``I think he can,'' Eveline said. ``I think he will. He said to me (Sunday), `You know, I think I can do this.' ''

The Butlers have been in New Orleans New Orleans (ôr`lēənz –lənz, ôrlēnz`), city (2006 pop. 187,525), coextensive with Orleans parish, SE La., between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, 107 mi (172 km) by water from the river mouth; founded  since Aug. 5, when Brett began a program designed to bring him back from cancer surgery and radiation treatment, and to prepare him to return to the Dodgers.

The plan, according to Eveline, is for Brett to continue his work with trainer Mackey Shilstone until Aug. 23. He then will return to his home outside of Atlanta in order to be examined by Dr. Bob Gadlage and an oncologist.

If he is cleared in that exam, Butler could join the club in Montreal on Aug. 27 and spend the next 10 days working out under the guidance of club physical therapists and trainers.

Following a week of low-impact exercises, Butler began a regimen of cardiovascular work Monday. Though the Dodgers would prefer he not throw or hit until he is under their supervision, according to Eveline, Butler intended to work out with a minor-league team Noun 1. minor-league team - a team that plays in a minor league

``Now,'' Eveline said, ``it's a matter of doing a three-week spring training. His plans are to shoot for the 6th or the 9th (of September).''

Apparently, Butler has made dramatic improvement in New Orleans. His saliva glands are functioning and his weight is back to 157 pounds, an increase of 12 pounds since he ended radiation therapy on July 29. His right shoulder, damaged during cancer surgery, is improving, Eveline said, and his energy is strong.

In fact, she said, Brett was inspired by Tim Wallach's grand slam Sunday afternoon in Cincinnati.

``He said, `Oh, I gotta get back. I gotta get back,' '' she said.

Butler was diagnosed this winter with an infected right tonsil tonsil

However, Eveline said, a blood test taken on Friday was proof that Butler is healing. In fact, a physician in New Orleans said that Butler's blood counts were as strong as they have been in 10 years. His cholesterol level, for example, has improved from 160 to 142.

Time change: Wednesday's game at St. Louis has been changed from a 5:05 p.m. start to 4:35 p.m., and will be shown nationally on ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network .
