DODGERS NOTEBOOK : BUTLER ISN'T JUST HELPING, HE'S HOT.

Byline: Kevin Acee Daily News Staff Writer

If there were doubters of Brett Butler Brett Butler can refer to different people:
  • Brett Butler (comedian), the actress/author/comedian.
  • Brett Butler (baseball player)
  • Brett Butler (voice actor), the voice of "Dr. Quinn" on Sealab 2021.
, let Wednesday show them the light.

Butler hit five singles in five trips to the plate. He scored two of the Dodgers' first three runs in a 5-2 victory over the New York Mets

. He has reached base in nine consecutive games and is batting .311 with a .446 on-base percentage. In the last three Dodgers victories during their season-opening homestand, he scored the winning run.

``I wanted to help and contribute to the club,'' Butler said Wednesday. ``And I think I've done that.''

If everyone accepted his comeback from cancer at age 39 the way his teammates do, life would be a lot easier for Butler.

``Everything he does, we're not going to label as amazing,'' Eric Karros
Eric Peter Karros (born November 4, 1967 in Hackensack, New Jersey) is a former American baseball player who played in Major League Baseball from 1991-2004. Karros attended UCLA, where he receieved a degree in economics. Karros played his first MLB game on September 1, 1991.
said. ``He's here to play and everything is fine. That's the way he looks at it. That's the way he wants us to look at it.''

The tough get going? Practice is over. After opening the season with 13 games against the Philadelphia Phillies “Phillies” redirects here. For other uses, see Phillies (disambiguation).

``The caliber gets a little better,'' manager Bill Russell Noun 1. Bill Russell - United States basketball center (born in 1934)

     said.

The Dodgers begin a three-game series Friday at home against the Houston Astros “Astros” redirects here. For other uses, see Astros (disambiguation).

for two games beginning Tuesday. Then it is off to Atlanta and Florida.

They begin this stretch disappointed despite a 9-4 record.

``We played decent,'' Karros said. ``We got some great pitching. Our offense could have done a little better. . . . It's better than 6-7 or 7-6. But our offense is not where it should be. Now we'll find out how we match up against those guys.''

Charmed: Tom Prince was 0 for 3 Wednesday, but he is still perfect. The Dodgers are 4-0 with the backup catcher in the lineup. The Dodgers were 11-4 in the games he started last season.

``It's nice you can play a guy in there like that,'' Russell said of Prince, who played for the third time in the past four games. He played twice in Pittsburgh due to Mike Piazza's elbow injury. He played Wednesday because Piazza was in Philadelphia at his grandmother's funeral.

Too much: After analyzing Wilton Guerrero's 375-foot home run that cleared the right-field fence by three feet, Karros came to a conclusion about his 470-footer to center field.

``It's wasted effort I guess,'' Karros said of his shot, which would have gone more than 500 feet if it hadn't struck the big video screen. ``I hit it about as hard as I could, but it doesn't matter if it's Guerrero's or mine.''
