 - To a man, everyone in the Dodgers clubhouse knew the first seven weeks of the season were more about survival than success. If they made it through and were anywhere near .500, they'd be happy.

How's ecstatic sound?

The Dodgers ended a grueling four-city road trip against the Florida Marlins The Florida Marlins are a professional baseball team based in Miami Gardens, Florida. The Marlins are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball's National League. From to the present, the Marlins have played in Dolphin Stadium.  on Sunday, bringing an end to one of the toughest stretches to begin a season that any Dodger can remember. And, after losing the first three games to Arizona, they come back 24-17 and in second place in the National League West.

``Nobody could have had a schedule like we had,'' Dodgers manager Davey Johnson
David Allen Johnson (born January 30 1943) in Orlando, Florida is a former second baseman and manager in Major League Baseball. Johnson played for the Baltimore Orioles (1965-1972), Atlanta Braves (1973-1975), Philadelphia Phillies (1977-78) and Chicago Cubs (1978).
said. ``We talked about it in the spring that we best not come out of spring training struggling. With a new shortstop/second baseman combination . . . a new prime player in our lineup, we couldn't afford to come out stumbling.''

It's not only the just-completed road trip that took the Dodgers to Arizona, St. Louis, Chicago and Florida that was difficult. The Dodgers and San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. The Dodgers have made three road trips, including an 11-day swing to start the season, and each time they've traveled to the East Coast. There's also the time they had to return to New York New York, state, United States

``It's probably the toughest start to a schedule of any time I've been here,'' first baseman Eric Karros
Eric Peter Karros (born November 4, 1967 in Hackensack, New Jersey) is a former American baseball player who played in Major League Baseball from 1991-2004. Karros attended UCLA, where he receieved a degree in economics. Karros played his first MLB game on September 1, 1991.
said. ``We could have put ourselves in a very tough situation. We played two teams (Houston and Chicago) under .500, played the fewest home games, so with the position we're in right now we couldn't ask for a better start.''

And even though they lost right-hander Kevin Brown The name Kevin Brown can refer to several different people, including the following:

to a broken pinkie for two weeks and had to juggle the rotation because of two other rainouts, the Dodgers lead the league with 16 road wins.

``You look at the schedule and see all the road games to begin with, and you blow it off and go do your job,'' right-hander Darren Dreifort said. ``Guys have done a great job. I think everyone has gotten to know each other pretty well so far and we have a good bunch of guys A Bunch of Guys (BOGs), or Group of Guys (GOGs) are terms used by counter-terrorism officials to refer to small, self-organizing terrorist cells.[1] BOGs typically have little to no contact with global terrorist groups like al Qaeda, so they independently plan and .''

--Not so home cookin': Dodgers left fielder Gary Sheffield won a World Series with the Marlins, but he's still lustily lust·y

booed every at-bat at Pro Player Stadium. But he did enjoy the 442-foot grand slam he hit Saturday in the Dodgers' 12-6 win.

``That was one of the highlights I wanted to do,'' Sheffield said. ``Even when I was here and I had success, it was a love-hate relationship love-hate relationship Ambivalence Psychiatry A clinical complex characterized by Freudian impulses; love-hate is normal for children passing through the 'anal-sadistic' phase of development, in which there is often simultaneous love and 'murderous' hatred toward . If I didn't get a hit, I got booed. If I got a hit, I was cheered. They were only behind you if you were doing well.''

--Counting on Cora: Even though Alex Cora was sent to Triple-A Albuquerque after Saturday's game, he did enough in his time replacing the injured Kevin Elster to give everyone confidence he can play shortstop on a regular basis if need be.

Cora hit .297 in nine games, drove in three runs and displayed great range and played above-average defense.

``He proved he's a big-league shortstop,'' Johnson said. ``He can hit up here. That's the big thing.''

--Odds and ends: Left-handed reliever Trever Miller, claimed off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, joins the Dodgers today. Lefty Onan Masaoka is expected to be sent to Albuquerque to free up the roster spot. . . . When Shawn Green and Sheffield hit back-to-back homers in the ninth, it marked the second time this season the Dodgers have done it. The last time was against Florida in Los Angeles, when Green followed a Sheffield homer.

Matchup: Believe it or not, the Dodgers play a home game. In fact, they open a nine-game homestand with the first of three against the Reds, a team they obliterated o·blit·er·ate

In his last outing, Dreifort lasted 4 1/3 innings and gave up six runs, all of which came after he slid into third and jammed his right knee. He says he's OK. Neagle is a much better pitcher on the road, going 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA.
