James Edwin Tracy (born December 31 1955 in Hamilton, Ohio) is a former manager in Major League Baseball who most recently led the Pittsburgh
said Tuesday that one of the key elements of the team's early-season success has been its situational hitting.

Although the Dodgers entered the day batting just .264 with runners in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on , they were tied for fourth in the National League with seven sacrifice flies, and they were averaging 1.29 runs a game more (4.83) than they did for all of last season (3.54).

``These first 18 games, we have shown a complete turnaround with men on third base and less than two outs,'' Tracy said. ``It doesn't matter what individual you bring up, they're very aware of what the situation is and where the defense is playing and what the situation calls for to try to get that runner home.''

Tracy specifically mentioned right fielder right fielder

Juan Encarnacion, an offseason acquisition from Florida, who is hitting just .232 overall but .389 with runners in scoring position.

``He really hasn't found his niche, which he will, but I haven't seen a bad at-bat when he comes to the plate with a runner on third and less than two outs,'' Tracy said. ``He really has an understanding of what he's looking for Looking for

to knock that man in. If you hit 19 home runs but drive in 94 runs (Encarnacion's stats last year), there have been an awful lot of situational at-bats, and you have had to be very successful getting that runner in from third base.''

The Dodgers' Nos. 3-7 hitters are hitting a combined .281 with runners in scoring position. Take Shawn Green's 3 for 19 out of the mix, and that average jumps to .312.

having been activated off the disabled list Sunday, and with the Dodgers now going with 12 pitchers and just five backup position players, Tracy said he might occasionally use a pitcher to pinch hit.

``We have some guys on this pitching staff who can swing the bat pretty well,'' said Tracy, who indicated the Dodgers will stay with a 12-man staff for a while. ``We won't hesitate to use one of those guys in a given situation if it makes sense. It could save a (position) player for later in the game and afford you an extra move or two in the latter part of a game.''

and Odalis Perez were the pitchers who came to mind. He also said he might use a reliever to pinch hit, but only relievers who aren't available to pitch on a given day because of heavy use in the preceding days.

--Werth update: Tracy said the Dodgers aren't expecting outfielder Jayson Werth (strained oblique) back anytime soon. Werth won't swing a bat until the end of this week at the earliest and will be sent on a minor- league rehabilitation assignment before being activated.
