DODGERS NOTEBOOK: THIS SEASON, PEREZ LOOKS UNFAMILIAR TO THE DODGERS.

. That appears to be the path of Dodgers lefty Carlos Perez.

Perez was yanked from the Dodgers' rotation Saturday in favor of right-hander Robinson Checo Robinson (Pérez) Checo (born September 9, 1971 in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic) is a former pitcher who played in Major League Baseball from 1997 through 1999.      said Sunday it's possible Perez will be sent to Albuquerque.

``I'm looking at options I could (use) with him,'' Johnson said. ``It's one thing if your velocity is down and another thing if the location is down. There's also an option he can be sent down (to Albuquerque) and make a couple of starts down there.''

After getting rocked for a career-high 10 runs in six innings Friday by Arizona, Johnson banished Perez to the bullpen, which irked the pitcher. But with Perez's record at 2-10 and his ERA 7.43, it's tough to argue on Perez's behalf.

``Basically, I see him as a starter,'' Johnson said. ``I don't see him in the pen.''

But Johnson grew tired of watching the Dodgers get blown out in his starts, and that leaves one option.

The Dodgers must make a roster move before Checo starts against Cincinnati on Wednesday. The choices appear to revolve around Verb 1. revolve around - center upon; "Her entire attention centered on her children"; "Our day revolved around our work"

or Perez. But Arnold is a valuable commodity in the bullpen and, apparently, Perez is not. It doesn't bode well for Perez, who was 33-35 with a 3.71 ERA when he signed a three-year contract in the offseason.

``To be honest, the guy we signed, we haven't seen him this year,'' said Dodgers general manager Kevin Malone

This will be Checo's second go-round with the Dodgers. He was blistered in two outings earlier this season after being acquired in the Dave Mlicki David John Mlicki (born June 8 1968 in Cleveland, Ohio) is a former right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball. But Johnson said his velocity is 96 mph and he's 3-6 with a 4.19 ERA with Albuquerque. Checo pitched three innings of shutout ball, striking out five, against Iowa Saturday.

``He's been dominating the last couple starts,'' Johnson said. ``Other clubs have inquired about him. He's been dominating and (Albuquerque manager Mike Scioscia

Change of thinking? Malone has remained steadfast in saying the Dodgers would likely hold on to their starting pitchers, but he admitted during the weekend series with Arizona that he might have to alter that approach.

Interest has been high in right-hander Ismael Valdes, but getting rid of the 25-year-old is risky. He's 8-8 with a 3.44 ERA this season and has been the Dodgers' most consistent pitcher. He's also 60-48 with a 3.26 ERA in his career.

The Dodgers would love to trade Perez, but, with his contract situation, that's unlikely. Malone also has considered trading Darren Dreifort, whose stuff is baffling baf·fle

      DODGERS vs. CINCINNATI

Time: 7:10 p.m., at Dodger Stadium.

      TV/Radio: Fox Sports West 2; 1150-AM, KWKW-AM (1330 Spanish).

Matchup: The Dodgers return home for seven games, starting with a four-game set against the Reds. The Dodgers open the series with right-hander Ismael Valdes (8-8, 3.44 ERA), who no doubt will be auditioning for several teams in case the Dodgers decide to trade him by Saturday's deadline. Valdes has won three of his last four starts and has been a second-half pitcher in his career, going 27-14 with a 2.98 ERA after the All-Star break. The Reds begin the series with lefty Ron Villone (5-3, 3.48).
