DODGERS NOTEBOOK: TEAM WARY OVER PENNY'S RETURN.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

Brad Penny Bradley Wayne Penny[1] (born May 24, 1978 in Blackwell, Oklahoma)[2] is a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball for the Los Angeles Dodgers.[3] Early career , who is moving closer to a return, is scheduled to throw batting practice Tuesday. But if he has any other problems as a result of the strained right biceps that has kept him out since Aug. 8, the Dodgers probably will shut him down the remainder of the season.

There are just 20 games until the team's regular season ends and, barring a complete collapse, its playoffs begin.

Dodgers manager Jim Tracy
This article is about the baseball manager. For the member of the Tennessee Senate, see Jim Tracy (politician).

said: ``If he has any kind of a setback,'' - and then made a slashing motion to his throat - ``the plug is pulled.''

He was quick to point out it wasn't definitive and depended on what the setback and situation was. But looking at the schedule, Penny's days are numbered.

A minor-league rehabilitation rehabilitation: see physical therapy.  stint isn't an option anymore and Tracy said he wasn't sure if the instructional league is an option. That means if Penny is ready, the Dodgers will try to ease him back into the mix with a stint out of the bullpen. The ultimate plan, of course, is for him to start. Penny won two World Series games for the Marlins last year.

to put him out there,'' Tracy said. ``I want to make it very clear that from the bullpen standpoint you hope you're involved in a game where it makes complete sense to have him out there, where you'd be in a one-sided game either way.''

games would carry less weight and allow Penny more opportunities to pitch from the bullpen, although it is possible they could use him before that.

Penny came out of Saturday's bullpen session, in which he threw 56 pitches at about maximum effort, with no ill effects.

He'll throw long toss Monday and if Tuesday goes well, he'll pitch in a simulated game.

``This back stiffness that he's been dealing with has been something that's been there all year long, but we've been able to manage and take care of,'' Tracy said. ``He's had stiffness periodically and has pitched some of his best games of 2004 under those circumstances.''

--Fan-tastic: Tracy praised sellout crowds for the St. Louis series. Sunday's sellout put the Dodgers above the 3 million attendance mark for the season attendance mark (3,013,501). It's the 19th time in franchise history they've had 3 million in attendance to extend their major-league record. The Dodgers have had at least 3 million fans in each of the last nine seasons.

But Tracy has never seen anything like this.

``I've seen them be behind us, no question, but have I seen the energy level quite like this? No,'' Tracy said. ``It's also fair to say that I haven't come to the ballpark in September with a (five-game lead) in my four years.''
