DODGERS NOTEBOOK: SOURCES: SIDES DISCUSS LONG-TERM CONTRACT FOR BELTRE.

With Adrian Beltre's situation in limbo as the sides await a hearing date for a grievance on his request to become a free agent, Beltre's representatives are ready to discuss a multiyear contract that could put an end to the situation.

The Dodgers are also listening, though it remains uncertain whether they'll react.

Beltre's agent, Scott Boras, and Dodgers managing general partner and CEO Bob Daly spoke briefly last week about a contract, baseball sources said.

While Daly acknowledged he talked with Boras on a number of issues, including Beltre, he said the Dodgers haven't entered negotiations to sign Beltre to a multiyear deal. Daly also said a contract proposal was not received from Boras, nor did the Dodgers make one.

However, baseball sources said Boras could be ready to present another contract to the Dodgers. The club already balked at signing Beltre to a long-term deal when it was learned in October he was signed before his 16th birthday, a violation of major league rules.

Though the length and details of the contract being sought by Beltre are unclear, it's expected to be on the low end. However, it would come with a large signing bonus in an attempt to recoup the money he lost in signing- bonus potential when he was signed by the Dodgers at age 15.

If the sides can agree on a long-term contract, Beltre would drop his appeal to be declared a free agent. After it was learned the Dodgers signed the 20-year-old illegally, commissioner Bud Selig denied Beltre's request to become a free agent.

Beltre hit .275 with 15 homers and 67 RBI last season, his first full one with the Dodgers.
