DODGERS NOTEBOOK: SORE BACK HAS JORDAN ANXIOUS.

Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

Brian Jordan's aching knee and sometimes sore side has company, a sore back that kept the Dodgers left fielder out of Friday's lineup and threatens to keep him on the bench a few more days.

Jordan, who was examined by doctors the last two days to diagnose the problem, missed most of the 1997 season with a bulging disk bulging disk Neurosurgery A condition caused by protrusion, herniation, or prolapse of a vertebral disc from its normal position in the vertebral column; the displaced disc may exert force on a nearby nerve root causing the typical neurologic symptoms of radiating .

,'' Jordan said. ``I'm trying to say no just to stay on the positive side. They don't think it's a disk problem. Hopefully, it's just muscular and a strain.''

Though Jordan had his first two-RBI game since July 2 in Thursday's victory against Pittsburgh, the back injury was on his mind.

``I was scared to let it turn loose and swing hard,'' Jordan said. ``I don't want to get in that situation, worrying about my back and what is wrong. I did that in '97.''

The bulging disk sent Jordan to the disabled list three times in 1997 and limited him to career-low 47 games with the St. Louis Cardinals For the National Football League team that played in St. Louis from 1960 to 1987, see .

. He rehabbed it rather than undergoing surgery.

Jordan said doctors told him they believed it was a strain. He suffered the injury ducking out of the way of a 2-2 pitch during Monday's game in Philadelphia. It was aggravated when the team sat in the airplane on the runway for 4 1/2 hours because of weather delays, then flew five hours to Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

``I probably should have rested for a couple days, but I came back and played three games,'' Jordan said. ``I would have sat out (Thursday), but because of the situation with the lefty (Jimmy Anderson

Jordan missed six games this season with a sore side, and he needs surgery on his left knee after the season.

The Dodgers want Brown to be able to throw 90 pitches upon his return to the rotation, and he threw 86 in six innings against Edmonton.

Brown, who dealt with a 25-minute rain delay before the start, retired the first 11 batters he faced and yielded one run on five hits. He walked one and struck out four.

``He didn't have his best stuff but I thought he battled really well,'' said Dodgers general manager Dan Evans, who watched Brown's outing. ``Part of battling back is pitching through your less-than-best stuff. It was very encouraging because he really made good pitches when he had to. He had good life on his pitches later in the game.''

Evans said Brown's fastball velocity was between 87 and 90 mph, but he got better as the game went on.

The Dodgers are expected to activate Brown next week. Internally, the most talked-about day for his return is Friday when the Dodgers open a three-game series against the Mets at Shea Stadium Coordinates:

--Looking ahead: The preliminary schedules for the 2003 season are circulating across the leagues, and the current one has the Dodgers opening the season March 31 at Arizona. The Dodgers home opener is tentatively slated for April 7 against the Diamondbacks.
