    Carl Reginald Smith (born April 2, 1945 in Shreveport, Louisiana) is a former Major League Baseball outfielder, coach and front office executive. During a 17-year big league career (1967-1982), Smith appeared in 1,987 games, hit 314 home runs and batted .287.

      Michael Lorri "Mike" Scioscia (born November 27 1958 in Morton, Pennsylvania) is a former catcher and current Major League Baseball manager. His last name is pronounced SO-shuh. He is often referred to by the nickname Sosh.

      Smith, the hitting instructor/first-base coach, will remain on the bench during games to talk to the hitters while Scioscia, normally a bench coach, will take over his first-base duties. The arrangement began Thursday and stayed that way throughout the four-game series with the Marlins.

      ``Reggie's in the dugout talking more to us about hitting, going over the scouting reports, particularly with three rookie pitchers going,'' Raul Mondesi said.
