DODGERS NOTEBOOK: SLUMPING MONDESI GETS REST.

Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

One thing Raul Mondesi doesn't like to do is sit. Dodgers manager Davey Johnson
David Allen Johnson (born January 30 1943) in Orlando, Florida is a former second baseman and manager in Major League Baseball. Johnson played for the Baltimore Orioles (1965-1972), Atlanta Braves (1973-1975), Philadelphia Phillies (1977-78) and Chicago Cubs (1978).
understands that, but he won't change his philosophy.

Johnson likes to rests players. Therefore, for the first time this season Mondesi won't be in the starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .

``Mondesi never looks sluggish to me,'' Johnson said. ``He got the hit to get us a run (Tuesday). I don't want him to get in a rut.''

After hitting 18 homers and driving in 44 runs in the first two months, Mondesi has one homer and six RBI RBI

Eric Young in favor of Craig Counsell. Hollandsworth and Counsell will give the Dodgers a left-handed presence in the lineup.

Chase will wait: Padres right fielder Tony Gwynn said the worst part of his pursuit of 3,000 hits is answering the same questions day after day. The second worst part are the injuries, which have cost Gwynn the better part of three weeks this season and also knocked him out of Tuesday's series opener with the Dodgers.

Gwynn left Saturday's game against Pittsburgh with tightness in his left calf. He didn't play Sunday and was scratched against the Dodgers after originally being in the lineup.

However, before Gwynn was declared a no-go, he sat down and talked for nearly two hours about seemingly everything, including his impending im·pend

an infield single against Pittsburgh in which the ball hit off the pitcher first, Gwynn's mind flashed ahead.

    ``When I got to the base I thought, `God, I hope 3,000 is clean,' '' Gwynn said.

Around the bases: Dodgers manager Davey Johnson said Todd Hundley would likely return to the lineup Saturday in San Francisco, though it won't be for good. He'll catch lefty Carlos Perez, who is fighting to keep a spot in the rotation. . . . For the second straight game, Adrian Beltre batted second for the Dodgers, and Jose Vizcaino batted seventh. Beltre is hitting .302, but the last time Johnson tried to bat Beltre second (mixed in with one leadoff appearance) he hit .185 (5 for 27) before the idea was scrapped. . . . Angel Pena was batting .150 (3 for 20) since taking over the Dodgers' catching duties from Hundley. . . . Tuesday's game was the first of 16 straight the Dodgers play against division teams; 10 of those are on the road. . . . The Padres were hoping first baseman Wally Joyner (left shoulder injury) would return during the series, but it appears he may not be ready until the weekend. . . . San Diego plans to activate pitcher Andy Ashby (strained lower back), so he can start the series finale Thursday.

    DODGERS VS. SAN DIEGO

Time: 7:35 p.m., at Dodger Stadium.

    TV/Radio: Fox Sports West 2; 1150-AM, KWKW-AM (1330 Spanish).

Matchup: Dodgers right-hander Ismael Valdes (5-6, 3.60 ERA) looks to break his losing streak at four games, the fourth time in his career he's lost four in a row. He's never lost five in a row. But Valdes' losing streak isn't due to awful pitching. During the streak, he's allowed 10 runs in 27-2/3 innings (3.26 ERA) and has struck out 23. The Dodgers have scored eight runs in those games. San Diego righty Woody Williams (2-5, 3.76) allowed seven runs in 5-2/3 innings against Philadelphia in his last start. Williams allowed one run in six innings in an April start against the Dodgers. The Padres are 7-7 in games started by Williams.
