Nine games into the season and the Dodgers have done little to provide an answer. They are 5-4 but averaging 3.8 runs per game as the middle of the lineup continues to have problems.

The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on ).

``It hasn't been real consistent, but we'll get going,'' said Green, who had an RBI single in Thursday's 4-3 victory over the Giants. ``It's the kind of thing where guys come in and one day they feel good, and one day they feel a little off. It's getting into season form. We'll get going. We'll start rolling.''

Although the first two spots of the batting order are hitting a combined .292 and the seventh and eighth spots .286, the Nos. 3 through 6 slots are hitting a combined .235.

And no one is struggling more than Jordan, who was an instrumental ingredient of the Sheffield trade with Atlanta. Jordan is batting .188 with a grand slam and five RBI. He is 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

``I'm not even in form right now and we're winning. That's the great thing about it,'' Jordan said. ``Offensively, we're not even clicking yet. So I'm excited. Guys are still trying to get their timing.''

``That's bad and then when the athlete doesn't want to sign autographs or do anything, than the fans get mad at us,'' Jordan said. ``I'm trying to play my tail off and entertain the fans and guys are going to throw beer on me. It makes no sense for a fan to do that. I was so mad I was trying to catch the guy to bring him to the clubhouse.''

Moorehead said a search ensued, but the suspect left the ballpark and was not apprehended.

--Roberts' homecoming: Growing up in Oceanside, Dodgers center fielder Dave Roberts rooted for the San Diego Padres and spent many days at old Jack Murphy Stadium. In fact, his fondest baseball memory as a youth was witnessing Tony Gwynn's 2,000th career hit.

But until today, the only time Roberts played in what is now Qualcomm Stadium was as a senior in high school - when he was quarterbacking Rancho Buena Vista to a victory over Morse High in the 1989 San Diego CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. ``When I grew up, which is a long time ago, I pretty much would root for anybody who was playing against the Dodgers. Put it that way,'' said Roberts, 29, acquired in a December trade with Cleveland. ``The day I got traded, genuinely, I became a huge Dodger fan. I cut myself one day and I started seeing blue coming out of my finger. I think the Dodger blue is starting to seep out.''

Roberts, who lives in Carlsbad, said he will leave 12 tickets for those close to him, but he is expecting close to 100 friends, family members and former teachers.

``What's funny is that I might have more nerves playing in San Diego than I had opening day at Dodger Stadium,'' Roberts said. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)
