Gary Antonian Sheffield (born November 18, 1968 in Tampa, Florida) is a Major League Baseball designated hitter and outfielder for the Detroit Tigers.

It is the same thumb that forced Sheffield to miss all but 63 games during the 1995 season. He underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament.

Earlier this season, Sheffield sprained the right thumb and missed several games.

Saturday, Sheffield injured the thumb swinging the bat in the first inning. He dropped the bat in obvious pain, but stayed in the game until the fourth. Sheffield went 0 for 2 with one strikeout.

Hubbard time: The Dodgers' problems certainly haven't been Trenidad Hubbard's fault.
