DODGERS NOTEBOOK: SHEFFIELD SIDELINED WITH DIZZINESS.

Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

Rather than spending the time in left field, the Dodgers' Gary Sheffield

For other people named Gary Sheffield, see Gary Sheffield (disambiguation).

Gary Antonian Sheffield (born November 18, 1968 in Tampa, Florida) is a Major League Baseball designated hitter and outfielder for the Detroit Tigers.
spent Thursday afternoon at the hospital undergoing tests after experiencing dizzyness and fatigue at home.

Sheffield was kept overnight so he could undergo tests to determine the cause of his symptoms. His availability for today's game was uncertain.

Sheffield's wife, DeLeon, called Dodgers trainer Stan Johnston at approximately 9 a.m. to alert the Dodgers of Sheffield's condition. Dodgers team physician Dr. Michael Melman was consulted and decided to put Sheffield through a series of tests at Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood.

``Upon the reccommendation of team physician Dr. Mickey Mellman, Gary Sheffield will be kept at Centinela Medical Center overnight for testing,'' Dodgers spokesman John Olguin said.

Sheffield, 32, went 2 for 5 in the Dodgers' win Wednesday against Montreal.

``We were joking around after the game last night and he was fine,'' Johnston said.

Johnston said the decision to send Sheffield to the hospital was precautionary. In his place, Bruce Aven David Bruce Aven (Born March 4, 1972 in Orange, Texas), is a former Major League Baseball outfielder.

Aven played for four different ballclubs during his career: the Cleveland Indians (1997, 2002), Florida Marlins (1999), Pittsburgh Pirates (2000), and Los Angeles Dodgers

``I was very excited about what I saw (Wednesday) night, especially at the juncture of the season we're in right now,'' Tracy said. ``I was very hopeful of being able to walk in there and write down the same eight names in the exact same spots I did last night.

``It just seems like every time I get to the point where I'm very excited about doing that, I walk in here and I get the hard slider A block of material that holds the read/write head of a magnetic disk. See flying head.  on the black (of the plate), down and away, and I have to juggle.''

--Holding out hope: Right-hander Andy Ashby
Andrew Jason (Andy) Ashby (born July 11, 1967 in Kansas City, Missouri) is a former starting pitcher who played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1991-1992, 2000), Colorado Rockies (1993), San Diego Padres (1993-1999, 2004), Atlanta Braves (2000) and Los Angeles Dodgers

Ashby hasn't begun a throwing program yet and the Dodgers are pointing toward spring training for his return, but Ashby hasn't given up on pitching again at the end of the season. He said he would like to work toward making a start or two as the season winds down, if his elbow allows.

``Whether I pitch again, I'd love to,'' said Ashby, who was 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA in two starts this season. ``It'd be great, but I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

However, since Ashby is under contract for 2002 and 2003, the Dodgers might not want to chance his long-term health for a start or two in September.

--Baldwin ready: Dodgers right-hander James Baldwin threw his bullpen session prior to the game, curveballs included, and said he will have no problem pitching Saturday against the Mets. Baldwin was scratched from his Wednesday start because of a strained oblique muscle in his left side.

``It feels like I can go out there and win a ballgame,'' Baldwin said. ``I didn't care what happened (in the bullpen) because I wasn't missing another start.''

Matchup: The Dodgers open a three-game series with the Mets by sending RH Terry Adams (8-5, 4.72) to the mound. Adams is 6-3 with a 4.59 ERA in 14 starts. He's coming off a loss to Philadelphia in which he allowed three runs in six innings. It's his first start against the Mets, who will open the series with LH Glendon Rusch (6-7, 4.48). The Dodgers tried to acquire Rusch in a trade last month but didn't want to part with starters Luke Prokopec or Eric Gagne. Rusch is 2-2 with a 3.16 ERA in six starts since the All-Star break.
