brought interesting experiences to Davey Johnson
David Allen Johnson (born January 30 1943) in Orlando, Florida is a former second baseman and manager in Major League Baseball. Johnson played for the Baltimore Orioles (1965-1972), Atlanta Braves (1973-1975), Philadelphia Phillies (1977-78) and Chicago Cubs (1978).
. None of them matched what he went through in Cincinnati, where life ranged from the intense to the absurd.

Johnson, upon returning to Cinergy Field for the first time since managing the Reds, talked Tuesday about what it was like with outgoing Reds owner Marge Schott Margaret Unnewehr Schott (August 18, 1928 — March 2, 2004) was the controversial former managing general partner, president and CEO of the National League's Cincinnati Reds franchise from 1984 to 1999. She was the first woman to buy a baseball team rather than inheriting it. .

``Riding the elephant (as a promotion), the dog hair (in caps for good luck), all are fond memories,'' Johnson said. ``Even Marge with her chilled red wine and screw-off top.''

There was also Schott's demand that Johnson not live with his fiance, Susan, while he managed the Reds and Schott sending faxes with the paw print of her dog Schottzie.

Even though Schott agreed to sell 5.5 of her 6.5 shares of the Reds to a group headed by limited partner and local billionaire Carl Lindner, Johnson said he doesn't expect things to change.

``The dog will still be writing notes to the players and manager,'' Johnson said. ``I got one in Baltimore. I got a letter from Schottzie in November '93 saying if you aren't married by spring training, you're not going to be working in '94.

``I got married in January. So I owe a lot to Marge. I made the deadline.''

Even though he went 204-172 in parts of three seasons with the Reds, all was not rosy for Johnson in Cincinnati.

Johnson took over for the popular Tony Perez in '93, had the team in first place before the strike ended the '94 season and had Ray Knight

    .

Johnson then turned the reins over to Knight and headed to Baltimore.

``The third year we almost didn't get off the ground because we had replacement players,'' Johnson said. ``We started the season 0-8. . . . I attributed that because I let Ray manage the first eight games.''

While Zorc said he supports the Dodgers and wants them to return, he believes open debate is necessary because the state is expected to provide $7 million in funding to help Vero Beach and Indian River County purchase and renovate Dodgertown to keep the Dodgers in town.

Switching shoes: Dodgers left fielder Gary Sheffield

For other people named Gary Sheffield, see Gary Sheffield (disambiguation).

Gary Antonian Sheffield (born November 18, 1968 in Tampa, Florida) is a Major League Baseball designated hitter and outfielder for the Detroit Tigers.

``Every time I sprinted off the field because I had to change my shoes,'' Sheffield said. ``My feet were hurting so bad. They hurt in the second inning. It hurts your back'' wearing cleats in the outfield.

Having a Tripp: Dodgers utility man Tripp Cromer made his third straight start (fourth overall) as Eric Young continues to nurse a bruised ankle. Cromer has performed well in his place.

``I have to pace myself,'' said Cromer, who is 5 for 12 with three RBI RBI

Cromer has played first base, second base, third base, shortstop, left field and right field this season. Johnson said Young's status will be re-evaluated today.

    DODGERS vs. CINCINNATI

Time: 4:05 p.m., at Cinergy Field.

    TV/Radio: No TV; KXTA-AM (1150), KWKW-AM (1330, Spanish).

Matchup: Dodgers right-hander Chan Ho Park (3-3, 4.78) got a no-decision in his last start, which ended up in a Dodgers loss, but general manager Kevin Malone said ``that's the kind of game that gets you over the hump.'' Park has been inconsistent but allowed only a solo home run to Carl Everett in seven innings of work against Houston. Opponents are batting .269 against Park, who has allowed 10 homers in nine starts. Right-hander Brett Tomko (1-2, 6.10) starts for the Reds. Tomko was the Reds' opening-day starter but went 0-1 with a 7.76 ERA in five starts and was sent to Triple-A Indianapolis. But since being recalled May 16, the 26-year-old is 1-1 with a 2.31 ERA.
