DODGERS NOTEBOOK: PEREZ IS FINE IN RELIEF STINT HE DOMINATES BREWERS OUT OF PEN.

Byline: Steve Dilbeck Staff Writer

So, like, this Carlos Perez guy, how can the Dodgers keep him out of the rotation? Perez, who must have thought ``soft-throwing'' had become his new first name, had been so unproductive (4-6, 5.67 ERA) that he lost his starting spot in the rotation last week to 30-year-old rookie Matt Herges Matthew Tyler Herges (born April 1, 1970, in Champaign, Illinois) is a Major League Baseball pitcher. He is an alumnus of Illinois State University.

Signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1992, Herges would make his Major League Baseball debut with

But in his first appearance out of the bullpen since being bumped out of the rotation, Perez was - dare it be said? - masterful on Sunday against the Brewers.

Perez threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings, holding Milwaukee to three hits, with a walk and three strikeouts.

said Sheffield might be out three days or more, but after being examined by team doctors later, the outfielder said he could be back as soon as tonight.

``It should be no problem,'' Sheffield said. ``It's just sore today.''

Sheffield said at first he was too concerned with the umpire's call on his steal attempt to realize what had happened to his thumb.

``I was too busy arguing against the call,'' he said. ``But I knew when the adrenaline wore off, it was going to be sore.''

Sheffield had missed only two previous games this season, with a sprained ankle A sprained ankle, also known as a ankle sprain, ankle injury or ankle ligament injury, is a common medical condition where one or more of the ligaments of the ankle is torn or partially torn. . He said one of his goals is to play a complete 162-game season.

Aven played for four different ballclubs during his career: the Cleveland Indians (1997, 2002), Florida Marlins (1999), Pittsburgh Pirates (2000), and Los Angeles Dodgers

With Sheffield out and F.P. Santangelo serving the fourth day of his five-game suspension, the Dodgers played Sunday without a backup outfielder.

Aven, 28, was batting .250 with five home runs in 72 games for the Pirates. His fifth home run came on Tuesday against the Dodgers in Pittsburgh.

In exchange for Aven, the Pirates will get either a player to be named or cash by Sept. 15.

``We're short outfielders that are ready to play at this level,'' Johnson said. ``We've gone most of the way with three or four.''

Aven came to the Pirates in the offseason from Florida in exchange for outfielder Brant Brown Brant Michael Brown is a former professional baseball player.
