Carlos Perez is a starting pitcher Noun 1. starting pitcher - (baseball) a pitcher who starts in a baseball game

 again.

The departure of Orel Hershiser
Orel Leonard Hershiser IV (born September 16, 1958) was a former professional right-handed pitcher and is currently an analyst for Baseball Tonight on ESPN. In 1988, he won the Gold Glove, Cy Young Award, the NLCS MVP and the World Series MVP with the L.A. Dodgers.
means Perez is in the rotation for the foreseeable future. His next start is Saturday in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden .

``As soon as they give me the ball to pitch, I want to help my team. I want to win some games,'' Perez said. ``I don't go nowhere. I was a (starting) pitcher my whole career.''

Actually, Perez has pitched well enough this season, going 4-3 with a 5.25 ERA. There had been doubt if he would stay after last season's debacle, when he went 2-10 with a 7.43 ERA. But Perez has pitched well enough to end those discussions.

His last appearance was in relief, 4 1/3 innings Monday against San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  in which he gave up no runs and two hits and with one walk. This followed a similarly strong outing last weekend in St. Louis.

``They've used me because we don't have guys who can go four, five innings,'' Perez said. ``It's difficult when you warm up in the bullpen. You hve to warm up faster. (Monday) night, I threw 17 pitches and that's it. I tell them I'm ready I'm Ready is the double platinum second release from R&B singer Tevin Campbell. I'm Ready yielded the biggest R&B hit of his career the #1 R&B smash "Can We Talk", and produce 3 more successful hits in "I'm Ready", "Always In My Heart" and "Don't Say Goodbye Girl". . . . . The bullpen needs rest. The starting pitchers need to go six, seven or eight innings and then we can go to the other guys.''

--On depth: Hershiser wasn't exactly lighting things up, but neither has anyone except maybe Kevin Brown The name Kevin Brown can refer to several different people, including the following:
    • Kevin Brown (baseball) (b. 1965), a former Major League Baseball right-handed starting pitcher with 211 career wins
    • Kevin D. Brown (b.
     - and even he gave up some runs in his last start. With the suspension announcement due soon, Malone said there's nothing to worry about. The team has depth.

``We have six pitchers,'' Malone said. ``We have five starters in place, and if we need to, we can use Matt Herges Matthew Tyler Herges (born April 1, 1970, in Champaign, Illinois) is a Major League Baseball pitcher. He is an alumnus of Illinois State University.

is throwing well in Triple-A. Jeff Williams just came off the DL. Robinson Checo is pitching well, but he's on the DL.

``We've got options in the minor leagues, but if it didn't work, Matt Herges is very flexible. He started in the minor leagues. That's another option if need be.''

Williams, who had been on the 60-day DL with an injured left forearm, was reinstated and optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday.

Herges, 5-0 with a 3.40 ERA in 29 appearances, last pitched Saturday in St. Louis and gave up one earned run and one hit with two walks. He was ecstatic about Malone mentioning him.

``I'm honored by that,'' he said. ``It makes me want to go out and prove myself even more.''
