Jeffrey Charles Weaver
, the Dodgers' hottest pitcher of late, will move up one day in the rotation because of an off-day Monday and will start the opener Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.

Jose Lima was pushed to the back of the rotation. The move was less a reflection of Lima's poor start Wednesday at Montreal, against which he gave up six earned runs in 5 1/3 innings, than an attempt to align the rotation so Weaver can start once in each of two upcoming series with St. Louis. The Cardinals have the best record in baseball.

``It doesn't mean anything about Lima,'' Tracy said. ``It's about setting guys up in spots where you want them to pitch. The other thing is that you want to plug in Hideo Nomo. You can't let Hideo Nomo sit for nine or 10 days after he made his (final) rehab start. In terms of number of innings, Lima has enough that a couple of extra days isn't going to hurt him.''

Lima, who will be available out of the bullpen for at least a couple of days during what will now be an eight-day stretch between starts, took the move in stride Adv. 1. in stride - without losing equilibrium; "she took all his criticism in stride"

.

``I want to pitch, but I don't make the decisions,'' he said. ``I'll just get myself ready for Friday. They say I'm the guy they want to pitch (the opener) at St. Louis, and it makes me feel good to have them believe in me like that. It reminds me of when I was in Houston, and I was the man there. I'm looking forward to it. It will be fun.''

Nomo will replace Wilson Alvarez
Wilson Eduardo Alvarez Fuenmayor (born March 24, 1970 in Maracaibo, Zulia State, Venezuela) is a former Major League Baseball left-handed pitcher who played in 13 seasons for the Texas Rangers (1989), Chicago White Sox (1991–1997), San Francisco Giants (1997), Tampa
in the rotation. Alvarez, who was getting rocked for the second start in a row, got knocked out of Friday's game in the second inning when New York Mets

left fielder Cliff Floyd hit a one-hop comebacker off Alvarez's left elbow. It isn't clear how long Alvarez will be out, but with Edwin Jackson and Brad Penny possibilities to follow Nomo off the DL, Alvarez probably won't be back in the rotation.

Nomo struck out 10 batters in 5 1/3 innings Thursday at Fresno, his third start on a rehabilitation stint with Triple-A Las Vegas, and hit 90 mph several times on the radar gun. Tracy and pitching coach Jim Colborn are cautiously optimistic they will get better results from Nomo than before he went down, when he went 3-10 with an 8.06 ERA.

--Math lesson: Tracy said the notion the Dodgers are feeling the pressure after losing 11 of their past 21 games is wrong. He also said if his club can win at least 19 of its final 34 games, it will be difficult for either San Francisco or San Diego to catch up.

``That would make us 93-69,'' Tracy said. ``One of those clubs would have to go 24-10, and the other would have to go 22-10, just to tie. They also have to play one another several times. So from a numbers standpoint, this thing is in our favor.''
