on a Dodgertown back field. He did so fairly smoothly, an indication he is adjusting well to his new position less than a week after reporting to spring training.

The enormous swath of leather on Garciaparra's left hand, well, that will need some work.

Garciaparra has never played first base, and thus has never worn a first baseman's mitt. Thus far this spring, he has tried several of them - none of which is completely broken in - and will try several more in hopes of finding just the right one by Opening Day.

``I'm looking for Looking for

the same things I looked for as a shortstop, things like feel, the same things any baseball player has to find for his glove,'' Garciaparra said. ``This glove is so different, a lot bigger and with a different shape. So it's definitely different, and it's an adjustment. But I just have to go out there and get my work in regardless.''

In comparison to a shortstop's glove, which is smaller with less webbing for the ball to get caught in, a first baseman's mitt is like the head of a shovel to give its wearer a better chance of digging out short-hop throws from other infielders.

Garciaparra isn't bogged down by the constraints of an equipment contract and thus has tried several different brands, some of which he tried to break in as well as he could before coming to camp. If there is a favorite right now, it is a Mizuno model he has worn the past couple of days.

But Garciaparra said he expects to receive other mitts to try as the spring progresses. He plans to settle on one well before the club breaks camp on March 29.

``The A's had already added me to the 40-man roster and told me what they were looking for from me in spring training,'' said Ethier, who reported to camp on Sunday. ``I hadn't heard any trade talks involving me, and neither had my agent. The only thing I was upset about was that I wouldn't be going to spring training at home in Phoenix anymore.

``But when I sort of re-examined the situation, I realized how many guys, not only in minor-league baseball but just 18-to-35-year-olds in general, would love to be doing this and to have the opportunity I have. I'm just proud to wear the uniform and play the game.''

Ethier will be joined in camp by fellow Dodgers prospects Matt Kemp and Andy LaRoche. Just before the trade, they were his teammates with the Phoenix Desert Dogs The Phoenix Desert Dogs are a minor league baseball team of the Arizona Fall League located in Phoenix, Arizona. ``I was sad to say goodbye to those guys, but I didn't realize we would be teammates again in just a couple of weeks,'' Ethier said.

--Land deal: Dodgers owner Frank McCourt plans to ``pay off'' the rest of his $145 million loan from NewsCorp's Fox Entertainment Group by selling 24 acres of Boston real estate to the company. The move officially severs NewsCorp's ties to the club, which it bought from Peter O'Malley in 1998 and sold to McCourt in 2004. The loan from Fox to McCourt helped cover the purchase price of the team, the stadium and the stadium grounds.
