DODGERS NOTEBOOK: NO HUNDLEY WORRIES?

Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer

A month into spring training and Todd Hundley
Todd Randolph Hundley (born May 27, 1969 in Martinsville, Virginia) is a former Major League Baseball catcher/outfielder.

Todd made his major league debut with the New York Mets on May 18, 1990 when he was only 20 years old.
hasn't caught a game for the Dodgers. Management says not to worry.

Hundley said he overdid a batting practice session six days ago, which caused inflammation in his elbow and knocked him out of Sunday's lineup against the St. Louis Cardinals For the National Football League team that played in St. Louis from 1960 to 1987, see .
The St. Louis Cardinals (also referred to as "the Cards" or "the Redbirds") are a professional baseball team based in St. Louis, Missouri.
. The Dodgers say not to worry.

Opening day is three weeks away and the Dodgers say not to worry.

``You'll know when I'm concerned,'' Dodgers general manager Kevin Malone
:Kevin Malone is also the name of a former Los Angeles Dodgers general manager.

Kevin Malone is a fictional character from the US television series, The Office. He is played by Brian Baumgartner.
said. ``When my eyes are fogged up and I have a look like I want to be 100,000 miles from here, then I'll be concerned. It's a strain from overuse overuse Health care The common use of a particular intervention even when the benefits of the intervention don't justify the potential harm or cost–eg, prescribing antibiotics for a probable viral URI. Cf Misuse, Underuse. . It's not a concern.''

Dodgers physical therapist Pat Screnar said the injury has nothing to do with the reconstructive right-elbow surgery Hundley underwent in September 1997. Screnar said it had nothing to do with the ligaments in Hundley's elbow.

``He has muscular soreness and we're going to wait until that calms down before he plays,'' Screnar said. ``His elbow is stable. (The injury) is on the other side of the elbow, the outside of the elbow.''

Malone said the revised plan was for Hundley to catch Tuesday, but Hundley voiced frustration about the incident for one of the few times since spring training began.

``What's more frustrating (than not catching) is the achiness in the joint,'' Hundley said. ``It's not the ligament. It's not where it was surgically repaired.''

Also discussed was the notion that Hundley might have to pare back his catching duties this season so as not to put extra strain on the elbow.

``I've caught a lot of games to this point in my career,'' Hundley said. ``To be smart, looking at it long term, a catcher would want to catch between 100 to 120 games, and that could keep a guy going. I've caught 150, 140 games. I'm not looking to cut back.''

    Young debut: Manager Davey Johnson
David Allen Johnson (born January 30 1943) in Orlando, Florida is a former second baseman and manager in Major League Baseball. Johnson played for the Baltimore Orioles (1965-1972), Atlanta Braves (1973-1975), Philadelphia Phillies (1977-78) and Chicago Cubs (1978).
said Saturday that Eric Young Eric Young can refer to:
      • Eric Young (baseball player)
      • Eric Young (footballer)
      • Eric Young (wrestler)
      • Eric Young (broadcaster)
      • Eric Young (American football), offensive guard at the University of Tennessee
wouldn't play until after the weekend, but after talking with the second baseman second baseman

, the skipper placed him in the leadoff role Sunday against St. Louis.

``I definitely made some progress,'' Young said. ``I had no problem with everything I did. Got a pop-up, a ground ball, was able to swing and run. Everything was fine.''

Young has been plagued by nagging stiffness in his lower back. Johnson's plan is to give him today off and put him back in the lineup Tuesday.

Sheffield on leave: Frustrated left fielder Gary Sheffield

For other people named Gary Sheffield, see Gary Sheffield (disambiguation).

Gary Antonian Sheffield (born November 18, 1968 in Tampa, Florida) is a Major League Baseball designated hitter and outfielder for the Detroit Tigers.
was granted permission to leave the team for a few days to tend to personal affairs in Arizona.

Manager Johnson said Sheffield came to the Dodgers a month ago and asked for permission to leave at this time.

But Johnson said the lost spring-training time won't hurt Sheffield because he wouldn't be able to do much the next few days anyway. Sheffield had a cortisone cortisone (kôr`tĭsōn'), steroid hormone whose main physiological effect is on carbohydrate metabolism. It is synthesized from cholesterol in the outer layer, or cortex, of the adrenal gland under the stimulation of adrenocorticotropic  shot Saturday to ease the pain he's experiencing from offseason surgery.

``He's very hard on himself and I told him that,'' Johnson said. ``We talked (Friday) and everything was fine.''

Sheffield is expected to return to Dodgertown on Wednesday.

Short hops: Dodgers trainer Charlie Strasser said right-hander Ismael Valdes' tightness in his left thigh was not a strain. . . . Starter Carlos Perez had a rough outing, allowing five runs on six hits in four innings.

      Sunday's recap: Mark McGwire
Mark David McGwire (born October 1, 1963 in Pomona, California) is a former professional baseball player who played the majority of his major league career with the Oakland Athletics before finishing his final years with the St. Louis Cardinals.
