DODGERS NOTEBOOK: Loretta thrives in a pinch.

Byline: Jill Painter, Staff Writer

Mark Loretta Mark David Loretta (born August 14, 1971 in Santa Monica, California) is a second baseman in Major League Baseball who plays for the Houston Astros. Previously, Loretta played with the Milwaukee Brewers (1995-2002), Houston Astros (2002), San Diego Padres (2003-2005) and Boston  is acting like he's been a pinch hitter pinch-hit

 his entire career.

Loretta is 7 for 10 as a pinch hitter with the Dodgers this season. It is a tricky job, but Loretta has starred in the role so far.

"The results are good, but you just try to go up there and have a good at-bat and ultimately make contact," Loretta said. "My plan as you saw (Thursday) night, make contact and even if you don't hit it great you have a chance to do something.

"I started out my career in this role and have come full circle. When I first came up with Milwaukee I was 'the utility guy' until I was able to break into the starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .

. It's something I've done in the past. I'm content with it because of the fact that we're winning. We have a chance to go far."

Loretta has a walk, four runs scored and two RBIs.

On Thursday, Loretta had the tying hit to shallow right field against San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. Decisions, decisions

Torre has yet to make a decision on whether he's going to keep the struggling James McDonald James McDonald could refer to:

"Weaver is an option," Torre acknowledged.

McDonald is 1-1 with an 8.16 ERA.

Torre said he'll make a decision today.

Managing Martin

Catcher Russell Martin has done a fine job with the Dodgers' inconsistent pitching, but he has been unable to get much going with the bat. Torre said he believes Martin will finish the season batting around .300, but he's at .205 with no home runs and 11 RBIs.

"He's fighting it. He's a little long, swing-wise," Torre said. "He's feeling good. His catching and dealing with the pitchers has been great, with all the trips to the mound. He's really been consistent in that regard. I complimented him last night after the game what a big difference he's made. Hitting-wise, he's fighting it."

Mexican League game postponed

Because of the weeklong closure of the Mexican League, the regular-season game between the Diablos Rojos of Mexico City and the Sultanes of Monterrey - which was scheduled for May 16 at Dodger Stadium - has been postponed. This is precautionary measure because of the swine flu.
