Whatever it was that got to Derek Lowe Derek Christopher Lowe[1] (born June 1, 1973 in Dearborn, Michigan)[2] is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He throws and bats right-handed.  on Tuesday at Chicago -- causing him to give up a five-spot in the fifth inning of a game the Dodgers had been leading by seven runs but would eventually lose -- appeared to have subsided Sunday.

This time, pitching in the Dodgers' biggest game of the season to date, the veteran right-hander sailed through seven innings and struck out a season-high nine batters while allowing only one run.

One thing didn't change: Lowe still didn't get a win, and neither did the Dodgers. They lost 2-1 to San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. ``That was a tough pitch, and I would (throw) it again,'' Lowe said. ``You have to give him a lot of credit. He was sitting on a breaking ball. Stuff like that happens in this game. ... I thought I did a good job of mixing it up.''

Since Aug. 1, Lowe is 5-1 with a 2.43 ERA. Take out that five-run inning against the Cubs, and that ERA shrinks to 1.70.

If nothing else, the playoff-tested Lowe has shown a remarkable ability to rise to the occasion in crucial, late-season games, even if he has little to show for it.

Another chance: The morning after rookie right- hander Chad Billingsley Chad Ryan Billingsley (born July 29, 1984, in Defiance, Ohio) is a Major League Baseball right-handed pitcher with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Biography
As a senior at Defiance High School in 2003, pitched in 11 games and was 6-1 with a 1.
lasted just one inning and threw 40 pitches in his first start back from an oblique injury, Dodgers manager Grady Little said Billingsley will remain in the rotation and make his next scheduled start Thursday against Pittsburgh.

Coming back: First baseman Nomar Garciaparra, who has a strained left quadriceps, is expected to return to the lineup tonight after missing the past two games. Jeff Kent started at first base for the fourth time this season in place of Garciaparra.
