DODGERS NOTEBOOK: L.A. THE PLACE? NOT FOR HUNDLEY.

Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

CHICAGO - After living through the mayhem for two seasons, Todd Hundley
Todd Randolph Hundley (born May 27, 1969 in Martinsville, Virginia) is a former Major League Baseball catcher/outfielder.

Todd made his major league debut with the New York Mets on May 18, 1990 when he was only 20 years old.
admitted it's comforting being away from the turmoil always engulfing Dodgers.

Hundley, who signed a four-year, $23.5 million free-agent contract with the Chicago Cubs in December, said former Dodgers general manager Kevin Malone
:Kevin Malone is also the name of a former Los Angeles Dodgers general manager.

Kevin Malone is a fictional character from the US television series, The Office. He is played by Brian Baumgartner.
was his own worst enemy and added Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  is an undesirable sports town.

``I'm just glad I'm not a part of it and I don't have to put up with that daily stuff,'' Hundley said Friday before the Cubs' 4-0 win against the Dodgers at Wrigley Field For the former ballpark in Los Angeles, see .

        [
. ``It's just an unfortunate situation, and (Malone) ended up cutting his own throat. It's ridiculous. He didn't know to stop talking. You know, good guy, very competitive guy. You can't blame him for that, but he just didn't know when to be quiet.

``I haven't seen a GM with that many headlines for all the wrong reasons, unfortunately.''

Ironically, Hundley was one of Malone's biggest busts on a player personnel side. After the 1998 season, Malone traded for Hundley, even though he was coming off reconstructive elbow surgery that kept him from catching for two years. Hundley was forced into starting opening day 1999 against Arizona's Randy Johnson

Randall David Johnson (born September 10, 1963), nicknamed "the Big Unit
despite having no feeling in two fingers on his throwing hand.

But Malone's downfall, as outlined by CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Bob Daly, was his innate ability to say and do controversial things off the field. Hundley said most of Malone's antics gave the players a chuckle, but it became a distraction when Malone and former Dodgers manager Davey Johnson
David Allen Johnson (born January 30 1943) in Orlando, Florida is a former second baseman and manager in Major League Baseball. Johnson played for the Baltimore Orioles (1965-1972), Atlanta Braves (1973-1975), Philadelphia Phillies (1977-78) and Chicago Cubs (1978).
feuded during the latter part of 1999 and most of 2000.

``Obviously a GM is hands-on, but not that hands-on,'' Hundley said. ``That's the difference (with) GMs, they delegate power and they let the manager do stuff. He didn't. He just wanted to answer everything. You have to let Davey do his thing and let him run his team and do it the way he's going to do it.

``It just wasn't like that. Every day it was something new in the paper. Davey had to put up with different stuff every day. I just know it was tough for Davey, and I like Davey. I had no problem with Davey at all.''

The Dodgers severed ties with Hundley in December when they didn't tender him a contract. He signed with Chicago, where his father, Randy, played, and where Todd grew up.

``It drags you down. It really does,'' said Hundley, who's batting .203 with three homers and 13 RBI. ``I loved to live there, but the attitude of the people there is just laid back. But for a sports town, obviously the Lakers dominated when I was there, and it just didn't seem like a real good sports town.

Cubs starter Julian Tavarez (2-1, 1.53) makes his first start since allowing five runs in five innings at San Francisco. After the start Tavarez made insensitive comments toward homosexuals.
