,'' Gillespie said. ``Nowhere in this country would you be allowed to let a guy assault you, and take your cap, and (provoke) you, and not be able to defend yourself.

The players' union has appealed the decision on Kreuter's behalf, so Kreuter was available to play Thursday.

Gillespie spoke with Kreuter for about 10 minutes before Thursday's game and expressed his support.

``He knows how I feel,'' Gillespie said. ``I think it's very, very unfortunate.''

--Another view: Don Newcombe, the team's director of community relations, also was emphatic in his support of the Dodgers' actions.

``That person has no right to take his personal property,'' said Newcombe, who pitched for the Dodgers in the said of the Cubs fan. ``What are you supposed to do? They went into the stands to protect their family. These players were (Kreuter's) family. . . . We're human beings. Why can't we protect Chad Kreuter?''

--Return engagement: Kevin Elster returns to San Francisco's Pac-Bell Park, site of his three-homer game April 11 in the first regular-season game at Pac-Bell.

But will he play? Elster pulled his left hamstring diving for a ball hit up the middle during Tuesday night's game.

``It's weird,'' he said. ``(The pain is) right on my (rump). It hurts to sit.''

Elster is listed as day-to-day, ``but it ain't today,'' manager Davey Johnson said.
