DENVER -- Matt Kemp's mother, grandmother, uncle and two aunts spent nine hours Thursday driving in a van from Oklahoma City Oklahoma City (1990 pop. 444,719), state capital, and seat of Oklahoma co., central Okla., on the North Canadian River; inc. 1890. The state's largest city, it is an important livestock market, a wholesale, distribution, industrial, and financial center, and a farm . What they saw in the Dodgers' 6-5 victory over Colorado on Sunday made the long journey home a bit less monotonous.

Kemp, the Dodgers' rookie outfielder who was promoted from Double-A Jacksonville just two weeks ago, hit a two-run homer after fouling a ball off his left foot in the first inning. He followed that threeinnings later with a solo shot that landed in almost the same section of left-center-field bleachers.

It was the first multiple-homer game of Kemp's budding career. It also made him just the third player in big-league history to hit sixhome runs in his first 15days in the majors, joining the immortal Mark Quinn

Born in St.
(1940), who combined to hit 58homers in a total of six big-league seasons.

One gets the feeling Kemp will far exceed those figures by himself.

``I'm just trying to be patient at the plate, get into some hitter's counts, get good pitches to hit and hit the ball hard somewhere,'' Kemp said.

--Kemp went 4 for 8 with a double, the two homers and five RBIs in the three-game series and has his batting average batting average

Gagne to go on DL: The Dodgers probably will place closer Eric Gagne on the 15-day disabled list for the second time this season before Tuesday night's game at San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. . Gagne, who was due to complete his anti-inflammatory medication regimen Sunday, hasn't pitched in six days and still can't throw without pain in his surgically repaired right elbow.

``Right now, he's not able to go even in the bullpen,'' Dodgers manager Grady Little said. ``That's not something we like.''

The move probably will buy a few more days in the big leagues for rookie third baseman Joel Guzman. Second baseman Jeff Kent is due to come off the 15-day DL when Gagne goes on.

--Drew sits: A day after suffering a bruised right quadriceps in a second-base collision with Colorado's Jamey Carroll, J.D. Drew sat out the game.

Little said he ``feels certain'' Drew would be ready to return Tuesday night after taking Sunday off.

--Mattingly signs: Shortstop Preston Mattingly, the Dodgers' supplemental first-round pick in last week's draft, agreed to terms on a $1 million signing bonus.

The club now has signed 10of its 50 selections, including three of its top 10.

Mattingly is the son of former Yankees great Don Mattingly.
